I normally don't match every receipt with my statement but I do go over each charge to see if anything appears wrong or off. A couple of times I've noticed something but when I go get the receipt, it will match up. I keep my receipts for several months and then go through them and shred the older ones.

I worked in finance for 38 years. We are sticklers for numbers.
I use my Discover card heavily. Every few days, I checks receipts against what is posted online. Then I shred the receipts.
I check my bank account online every week or so. I don't use a debit card so I'm looking to see what checks have cleared. And I balance that against my checkbook register.
I balance my other credit cards also. And I do not hold on to receipts after I have checked everything.

Are you sure the Target sum is on the credit card statement and not in a pending state? There may be differences between actual sums when the charge is in a pending post status -- especially at gas stations.
I'm the CFO of our household. When purchases are made, they are noted in a running spreadsheet. Receipts are scanned & then shredded. My better half just has to puts receipts into an envelope once home (I handle it from there).
Our bank and credit card balances are checked daily and reconciled. Like others, apps alerts me to on any charges and especially any large purchases (where the large sum is defined by me). Also have alerts set up for any attemps at international locations which are automatically declined.
I've thankfully caught multiple fraudulent charge attempts within 1-3 minutes with all of these safety nets.

If you use an Amex card for gas they pre=authorize a ridiculous amount but it is pending until the correct amount goes in and pending charge is removed. First time it happened I thought I was scammed but a day or two later it was the correct amount. Don't use that card for gas anymore.
@Imaoldhippie wrote:Hubby does it in our household he is the CFO. I despise any type of accounting. He reconciles our CC statements with receipts and has found a couple of errors at gas stations.

I always keep my gas station receipts. Because the pending amount may be different from what is actually charged. Without a receipt, there's no way to verify the amount.

grandi, I don't keep charge slips, but I must have a cheap streak, b/c I always know exactly how much I have paid for something.
Utilities are much more likely to switch charges or suddenly increase them than consumer credit cards, in my experience. I have found shady charges from Direct TV, ATT, and Florida Power and Light.
My credit cards post bills based on purchases I have made.

Mystery solved!!!
The family has 2 Chase Credit Cards!!
2 charges to Target on the same day but on 2 separate Chase Credit Cards. Target corportate helped her figure it out by the transaction numbers. There had to be an explanation.

??? I would never wait until the end of the month or the billing cycle.
I check my statements online daily, and can usually remember the dollar amounts from activity the day before.
