Talk to your doctor.  He may have some solutions.  He might recommend that you go to a "sleep clinic" for a night, where you'll be hooked to some monitors that will let him know what's going on.

Not to put too fine a point on the gender thing, but there are also plenty of competent female physicians.

@Tinkrbl44   agree about ingredients like Green tea and caffeine.   i can only have 1 cup of coffee in the morning - 1/2 decaf / 1/2 regular.

Lessman recently put Ashwaghanda (an herbal root)  in his Night Time  melatonin sleep supp.

kept me awake all night. some folks get insomnia from Ashwaghanda.  had to send them back.   i took the old formula Night Time for years.

I've heard that about the Ashwaghanda before .... so many unsuspecting things can throw us off.

BTW ... a few times over the years I have tried products with melatonin, and I always felt "sick" the following day.  I avoid melatonin now.

I didn't retire to keep the same hours I did while working for 40 years !!!  I retired so I didn't have to do that any longer.  If I want to stay up until 3:00 a.m., which I do quite often, I do it ...  I couldn't do that while working BUT I CAN NOW BECAUSE IM RETIRED !!  So I sleep until 11:00 a.m.   If I want to vacuum, empty the dishwasher or watch a show I recorded earlier, I do it ...  make a big pot of chili, I do it ...  I live alone with my puppies.  It sounds to me like you're knocking yourselves out trying to conform to certain hours although you're RETIRED !!  Take the guilt off yourself ...  you EARNED THE RIGHT TO RETIRE ...  DO ALL THOSE THINGS YOU USED TO SAY "WHEN I RETIRE" I'LL DO THUS AND SUCH !!  If I have an appointment I change my schedule for that day.  BUT I also nap when I feel like it, eat when I want to ...  do things when I want to ...  BECAUSE IM RETIRED ...  STOP WITH THE REGIMENTED ROUTINE AND RELAX !!

I have a medical issue that makes it critical for me to have nine hrs of sleep each night. It was tough to get into a routine; these are some of the things my dr suggested and I found all of them helpful initially.

Using the sleep setting on my iPhone to schedule sleep and wake times.

No caffeine after 5:30pm

Using a sleep mask if darkness is a problem

The Calm app, or other white noise or soothing sound machine

Small glass of tart cherry juice about an hour before bed

Avoid any "non-drowsy" cough/ cold meds

I hope some of these will help you get the sleep you need.

(I was also told melatonin would be very useful for helping me sleep and I found it worthless.)

Re: Do any Retirees have sleeping problems?

I seem to awaken at 2:30 am, hungry.

So, I have a sandwich, watch various tv programs for an hour or two, and then fall asleep until around 8:30 or 9:00 am.

Last night I ran across 'Brad Meltzer's Decoded.'   About the background/history re: Statue of Liberty, etc., etc., etc.

Interesting.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

@Pantsonfire2   I understand your point.  However, doctor appts. are during the day and other appts. so it would be a good thing to be awake and not in bed.  lol

Re: Do any Retirees have sleeping problems?

I usually sleep like a log.  Last night we went to bed around 10:30 which is very early (for me).

I know that TV is a no no in the bedroom, but I watch it every night (same thing usually--a rerun or three that I have recorded) and I'm asleep before the first commercial.

If I wake up to use the bathroom during the night, I may turn the re-run back on just to fall back asleep and boom out before the 1st commercial.

My husband falls asleep the second his head hits the pillow and the tv doesn't bother him, I keep it really low as I know the dialogue word for word...lol

I sleep late in winter months and like to wake early in summer.  We didn't wake up until 9:30 this morning and he HATES sleeping late (I think he thinks it isn't manly or something...lol).  To me, that isn't late especially if I don't go to bed till midnight-which is my usual bedtime.  Last nights sleep was wonderful!
