Of course it's upside down. The finest people will never even be known.

@MaverDaver wrote:You've hit a nerve. The salaries for actors and sports figures are out of control. People become star struck with these individuals. Seriously, I don't now how a family of say 4 can afford to go to these games. Prices for tickets, parking and food can cost you upwards of $300.
Then there's the fools that buy their sports memorabilia so they walk around with a shirt/jacket with someone's name and/or number on it. Oh let's not forget the real fools whose profession, i.e. painters, plumbers etc. that when completing the job tells the multi-millionaire "no charge'. If I were doing work for one these overpaid individuals I'd put everthing in perspective. Let's see -- I can fix that leaky pipe and it will only cost you $2000 and I'll paint that room for $2500!
Sorry, but there are MANY sporting events on various television networks, and you get the benefit of the comfort of your own home AND a narrator to tell you what's actually going on. Free, or nominal charges.
If that family of four wants to go to a live game, I'm sure there's room on the bleachers at the local high school.
Pick the options that work for your budget.

They entertain us.
The lead actors in best-selling movies/series get paid a fortune, as do professional basketball/football/etc. players, musicians/singers.
Should they be paid so much?
Should people focus on them so much?
What about side actors, teachers, scientists, nurses, electricians, truck drivers, professors, engineers, and others who are crucial to the infrastructure of everyday life?
Do you think we're upside down on placing so much value on entertainment?
Every time I see a thread questioning how much people make, it makes me wonder if people just don't understand how "business" works.
Money isn't the only consideration for most of us, but I doubt many would be willing to work for free. Would you?
Years ago someone told me that the definition of "value" varies a great deal. In many cases, people are less likely to be paid what they're "worth" and are paid based on how difficult would it be to replace them.
It's also based on the profitability of the industry you work in.
If you wanted to make a blockbuster movie that would make a few billion globally, and Tom Cruise said no thanks, how much do you think you'd have to pay to get the next actor to say yes? Certainly not miniimum wage.
If you have a trucking business, and one of your truckers just quit, how much would you have to pay to replace them? Certainly not millions. Perhaps another trucker or two would be happy to work overtime and a replacement might not even be necessary.
One thing is clear .... it's not just about values or entertainment.
BTW, some version of "entertainment" has been around since the cave man days. Clearly, there's a human need for it, and it's not going away.

We have for far too long placed athletes and other celebrities on pedestals and allowed our children to look up to them as role models. The worst is allowing the scummy, immoral behavior to be used as model behavior. Professional sports is different...how MBA/NFL players can be convicted of felonies and still keep their job...no other profession does that.
As long as people are willing to spend $2K for a concert ticket and teachers get little for doing a thankless job, it shows what things society values....and education isn't one of them.

I have never placed any value in entertainment, actors, etc. Yes most peoples view of 'celebraties' are upside down.
Some are good people, give to chairty, etc.
Hollywood is a cesepool, in my opinion.

ITA ... but WHO is it that allows children to look up to sports figures? The parents do.
I've never understood why anyone would think people in sports are "role models". Who comes up with this nonsense, and who allows it to continue? The parents do.
IF most adults had better parenting skills, a lot of this wouldn't even be an issue. Too many so-called parents basically relate to their kids as roommates.
It's crazy.

We all have a choice on who we will pay to see. Not many for me. I do resent college professors making big amounts of money while students and their parents struggle to pay tuition.

I do think a lot of young people now have unrealistic expectations about what life is like. They expect to live a more luxurious life than what they can reasonable expect from a job. They place no value on the kind of work most people do.
It seems schools teach kids everything but what kind of life they can expect and what kind of effort and training are required to live a certain way. The "do what you love" has led a lot of kids to have very unrealistic expectations. It should be focused on jobs and what money you can expect and what training you need.

Most of us could be teachers or nurses, all it would take is a college education. How many could be a professional athlete, a successful actor?
Any teacher or nurse who completes college and is certified/licensed has no problem getting a job, but that can't be said for actors and athletes.

I feel that too much emphasis is placed on the so-called entertainers and the so-called 'celebrities'. I have things to do with my time and money that don't include them so they don't get a nickel out of me.
