Re: Do You Still Write Checks?

As for checks disappearing totally....I sincerely doubt that.

As folks age, they may not continue to be competent enough for using computers.  If they have auto pay set up and they pass on, it may become a hassle for those left behind to straighten things out.

At some point, technology/ computers / internet may "go down" for a variety of reasons. And then what happens........

If the satellites that support GPS go down, I can't imagine the mess that would create !  This thought came unbidden to my mind as I was trying to locate a certain address !

As one poster pointed out, she takes her checks into the Post Office for mailing.  Smart move because I have noticed those big collection boxes "wrapped up" to prevent mail from being deposited and then stolen.

Yes! I like to use them for tax deductible items since I cannot depend on either online or hard copy receipts. My bank sends me a photocopy of almost all  checks, which I save in case of an audit. Also, as others have mentioned, some medical offices are charging a percentage for the use of a credit card. I do have automatic deductions for some recurring expenses but am old-fashioned enough that I also like the "built-in" record keeping of a check book register. The cost of the stamps does not deter me as I bought an overage of Forever stamps in years when they were much less expensive than today.

Re: Do You Still Write Checks?

Once a month to my hairdresser and twice a year to my landscaper. Everything else is online. I always carry cash at restaurants just in case they try to charge me 3% or more for the use of a credit card. I'm not paying that.

I'm not against writing checks per se, but realized I haven't written one in probably a year.   Anywhere that charges a cc fee takes debit cards without a fee so I do that.  For online transactions like DMV or my oil bill, I do the ACH option.

As far as older people still needing checks as someone stated upthread,  at some point in the not so distant future the entire adult population will have grown up using computers and smart devices so checks will not be needed at all.

Yes, I do...wrote a hefty one today for downpayment on a couch.  At our business we do not take any electronic payments, checks or cash only.  We have never been stuck with a bad check.

Re: Do You Still Write Checks?

One of my utilites charges a (small) percentage if I pay on line.  Nope.  They get sent a check.

I don't see what the big deal about check writing is.  My credit union offers free checking.

So many banks send me literature to open a *checking* account, if I have a direct deposit, they'll offer $300-500 and free checks.

ATMs are stupid people that accept checks, I think up to ten at a time for a deposit.

You can take a cell phone pic of your check and deposit it, so no human has to waste their time....(stupid time).

Why are people so against checks here?

Oh and I write mine out in cursive.  <thuds> posters hitting the floor.

90% we write checks. So many services like water and sewer charge for cards, any kind. 6 years ago, after over 30 years of doing it myself I turned over to hubbie. He actually is more organized and efficient and he's always tax ready lol

Re: Do You Still Write Checks?

@shoekitty.  The idea to prevent CC charges is to set up bill pay with your bank.  They'll either do it automatically or you can do it online yourself after you set them up as a payee.  It's really quite simple.

I've done it for years with never a mistake.  Man6 payments are delivered electronically so USPS is not involved.
