I worked per diem the last few years before I retired. It was feast or famine - one week 60 hours the next - none. Hated it - couldn't schedule anything because work was so sporatic, and couldn't count on the money. I'm much happier retired.

I prefer to pay my bills and eat. Therefore I prefer to work full time.

Just wondering for the replies which state you retired in your fifties or earlier, did you work a government job or a job with a pension and health benefits? The only reason I can't retire right now (I'm 58) is because of high health insurance costs! I'm set otherwise.

@Spinach30, Yes I retired from the state with pension for life as well as paid insurance After 30 years of service . I also put money into a 401K (optional) that I will draw from at 59 1/2

Personally, I would like the idea of working two part-time jobs. I see so many 'We're Hiring' signs around here, that I've often thought that some folks might like to work at a morning job, and then walk over to an afternoon job after lunch. That's if they are on some type of stable medical insurance plan via their spouse, or somewhere/somehow. (I'm not familiar with all of the options. No need to reply here.)

I retired at 58 on SSD - you don't get medicare for 2 more years so I was fortunate my DH was still working so I got on his work insurance.

I found a full time job more to my liking as well. When I worked 2 days and then off for 5 I personally found it hard to get back into the 2 days schedule.

I was supposed to work Tues &every other Sunday 3Pm to 11PM then 7AM to 7 PM on thurs. As I said before - it never worked out that way. However, because I was scheduling 24 hours a week I got some significant benefits like paid time off ( vacation & sick days) that required 24 hours a week.
