Re: Do You Ever Wonder How You Know How to Spell Some Words?

I've always been good at spelling, since childhood. I started reading at 4.

I believe how much you read, and what you read, has an effect on your spelling and understanding the distinct meanings of bore, boar and boor, for example - all words that sound the same don't mean the same thing, nor are they spelled the same way - but you wouldn't know that unless you see them WRITTEN. If you ONLY hear them, you wouldn't know. You have to be exposed to the written word, and be curious enough to look things up.

Other than that, my entire working life revolved around spelling, both English vocabulary and medical. My day involved constant checking for accuracy. It's second nature to me, I can't turn it off (and wouldn't want to if I could). My life has been accurate spelling and grammar.

I'm pretty sure some of the misspellings on posts are just typographical.

When I learned to type (on a manual typewriter), the keys were all capped with blanks.............It was pure misery to pass typing class.

Re: Do You Ever Wonder How You Know How to Spell Some Words?

Spelling was always my favorite subject in school.  Even today, my eyes go straight to anything that is misspelled.  I play online Scrabble a few times each day so that I can stay sharp, too.

I am grateful to all the teachers I had so many years ago.

I have always been a poor speller.  I also have a poor sense of direction.  I always wondered  if these two might be related as far as how the brain works?  I often get my left and rights mixed up... north, south, east and west. My Mother also was not good at directions.

Thank goodness for spell check!

That's pretty common and it has NOTHING to do with your intelligence.  Meaning, it's just the way your brain is wired and don't let anyone tell you differently Smiley Happy

A lot of really intelligent people have trouble spelling and telling left from right.

Re: Do You Ever Wonder How You Know How to Spell Some Words?

My Father was a Technical Editor, being able to edit in both English and Spanish being able to get pretty much anything given to him published, correct grammar and spelling came naturally to him.  He won awards.  He also had a photographic memory.

English and spelling came easily to me in school and I worked hard at it however with the advent of computers and a sense of "rush" to put down what you're thinking, a lot of whatever skills I had back then have been put to the test.... lol

There are also a lot of people out there who have exceptionally high IQs (Mensa worthy) who are Dyslexic and for the life of them can't spell, other than phonetically....  it's a brain hiccup that not everyone understands nor is sympathetic .... and are often made fun of on-line.

I think 98% of the people who use the word "literally", use it incorrectly.  The should be using "virtually" instead.

This always really bothered me also for some reason, but it is now in some dictionaries with the "wrong" definition.  I guess I need to take back what I said about a host who once said, "My head literally exploded" lol

Re: Do You Ever Wonder How You Know How to Spell Some Words?

While it will not help you choose the correct word, there is spell check here.

I always did well in spelling, (won the school spelling bee) but had a stroke and lost my memory.

Please, noone is not a word.  Use a capital letter and it's the last name of the lead singer in Herman's Hermits.

Herman's Hermits

* I checked a number of online dictionaries and found, if enough people use an incorrect spelling, it eventually becomes acceptable.  In some worlds (not mine)  noone is acceptable.

Lie and lay (past tenses) can be a real PITA.

Re: Do You Ever Wonder How You Know How to Spell Some Words?

I lucked out with parents who are gifted with language, with great schools, and with teachers who never let us get by with errors. I can't believe the errors I see today, although I think my own skills have probably slipped since I took early retirement. My iPad autocorrect makes up funny words, and I don't always catch those errors, I must admit. I always aced English, but I wonder if I would today! I'd like to think so.
