Given the fact that she was his regular fill-in host, and that she, herself, always said she owed her career to him, it was pretty tacky to not have let him know.

I guess it depends on which version you believe.

American Masters on PBS covered it well. Check it when it airs again.

I saw her on TV and commented to my son that I didn't think she was funny. I was selling advertising in her show. My son was 30...he thought she was very funny and told me about her books.

So since clients wanted to be in her show (younger people products) I decided to sneak a peek at her book. "Hello Vodka, It's Me, Chelsea."

According to the book, she overdrinks, has had numerous one night stands and discusses lots of bodily functions, digestive functions, etc. Like the Bridesmaids movie come to life. Yuck.

I guess it depends on which version you believe. Regardless of which one is true, it seems to me that a man who was raking in millions as king of late night television, could have handled that Joan might want to strike out on her own. So what IF she called him after a press conference. He was a big boy whose ego should have been able to handle it. Was she his indentured servant?

no, she was not his indentured servant. Maybe, just maybe, there used to be a thing called loyalty. Joan did get her start from Johnny and filled in many times. Being that she was the only female who did that, at the time, it was an honor. How did she repay him? A secret deal her husband arranged with Fox. Johnny was like her mentor and he found out after the news reported it. I imagine he was stunned and hurt. He may have told her to go ahead and give it a shot to host her own show, who knows he wouldn't have. But she didn't talk to him. Her show flopped. Her husband felt guilty for ruining her career, which was almost over at the time. Her own daughter hated her. Why would anyone condemn Johnny when her own family turned on her?

Some things in life you just can''t make right. Family members in many families die without ever having talked to each other for decades over some dust-up. These people aren't any different. I'm sure everyone knows of people who stopped talking to each other for minor things. You make too many assumptions about his ego.

I don't know who CH is but from many of these posts I apparently am not missing anything. I don't think many current comics are funny and I don't like much of their topic material. I have seen Joan Rivers host the J. Carson show and she did a good job way back then.

I don't think either one of them is right...............Phyllis Diller was the first woman comic guest host for Johnny........she was the first woman comic to headline in Vegas........did as many of the Bob Hope shows as Bob......first woman in the Friar's Club................................raven

O.K. I'm in the minority here. I have watched Chelsea since she first started on E. I like her but I get she's not everyone's cup of tea just like Bill Maher is offensive to me.

Also, I saw Joan Rivers live in Joliet a couple of years ago. She opened for Don Rickles. Let me say, I do watch Fashion Police so, I know how she is. However, her standup was disgusting and not funny to us. Don Rickles I thought would be offensive and he was quite entertaining and not vulgar at all.

I'm not terribly familiar with Chelsea Handler, but the Carson/Rivers feud was pretty public back in the day. As with most disputes, I believe that Carson's ego and River's poor timing in letting him know about her opportunity is to blame.

I make too many assumptions??? That's rich. I lost respect for him after reading several stories about his pettiness and vindictiveness, some which he himself admitted. Her daughter hates her so much that Joan lives with her and Cooper now, and she produces Joan's show. Her daughter was originally upset that they had split and then he committed suicide. How close was Johnny to his sons??? Check out some of the stories about that. How many wives did he have? Not exactly a prince himself. I'll tell you one thing I observed at two different Johnny Carson shows live. He was Mr. Congenial when the cameras were on. When the lights went down for commercials, he didn't even communicate with his guests nor even look at them. Joan did, though. I think that's very telling. However, it doesn't make a hill of beans difference to me. I know Joan is raunchy now, though to be honest, I think at her age, she has earned the option of saying and doing whatever she wants, no matter how ridiculous she looks or sounds. Chelsea hasn't even earned that much. Johnny is dead and gone, so naturally we look back on the dead with subdued critique. There are no paragons of virtue in entertainment, just egos.
