I buy a city garbage sticker at the grocery store, put it on the microwave, call city garbage collection for a pick-up, and put the old microwave on the curb. A special truck picks it up on my regular collection day.

My town has collection events 3 times a year.  You can bring electronics and sometimes they have a shredder for documents.

 

My problem is getting the items there.  I have some TVs that are huge and heavy.  No way can I get them into my car.  They sit in my basement for now.

Anything similar that I let go of, I put at the sidewalk for several days prior, for obvious Bulk pick up, and all items have disappeared before the Bulk Trash Truck comes.  

   

There are owner's in beat-up pickup trucks that scout the neighborhood sidewalks, each day prior to Rubbish Day to snag some items to fix up.

 

I usually put a note about the item's shape, & seems a lot of passer's by, can fix up these items, (which I find incredibly enviable)!  I wish I could do that, cause often, older items are made better, & less cheaply made, imho.

 

In fact, I've been silly enough to try to fix some electrical appliances that I've hovered over & saw another person successfully fix, prior, yet, when I try, I end up blowing up something, or other.  So, finally, after the last serious blow up, Ive given up with that!  duh!  I dont really recommend this  heh

 

Sometimes, more local (?smaller) Hardware stores, ex, Ace Hardware, know of some handy-person who likes to fix up appliances, at the very least.  And they either return to the happy owner, or resell.

 

Also, we have (keyword) "Shred-It" days that collect paper to shred, but also sometimes have a separate truck to collect discarded puters, appliances, paint, chemicals, etc. for their purposes, or proper disposal. Often these are Autumn, &/or Spring dates.

 

Research of any of this might reveal some kind of solution.  Good luck!

The high school of the small city I live in collects small electronics working or not.  I'm not sure why but they do.  There is a bin in front of the school.

Take it to a E cycling place---Value village and goodwill used to take them--had special bins to put them into. The local Staples store did too. I have a few things like that that I need to get rid of----printers and old PCs, lap tops---maybe this year I'll get to it.

My city has a hazardous waste center that is open two days a week in the mornings.  They have a section for electronics.  I took an old shredder there. 

 

They also have a very informative website on trash removal, recycling, hazardous waste, special pick-ups, etc.

You can also drop off at your township recycling center.

 

That is what I do. They have a section for all different items.

I read its not safe to put these in the trash so we dont.

 

If it was I would like doing that.

This is a great idea @DrakesMomma 

 

I wonder if the High School Shop Class, or Shop Class at a Trade School would welcome appliances to work on,to practice on, & apply their new talents to.
