I know a bit about how this works , my husband was on for a kidney , his sister was a match but antibodies made it impossible , so they signed up for a"swap " program . I asked the transplant Nurse how it works if his sister gave her kidney and then the other person backed out , and my husband would have nothing . She said the surgeries are all done at the precise same time and the OR Nurses are in contact with each other throughout . This can be done in different cities, as the kidney is flown to the recipient right away . That way no one can change their mind and some one comes up short . My husband did get a transplant so the "swap " program was not needed , but we learned a lot about it.
