Looking back, there were some I did like but without exception there were little nuggets to be had in all.
Hated calculus, but building out from it was a stepping stone.
Who can do a crossword without Latin?
Algebra is used everyday for evaluating sale prices.
Wimped out and took ceramics to pass an art requirement. Glaze is a topic in itself.

Algebra in my Freshman year. I flunked it and had to take it in summer school. Then I barely passed.

Music, have no music ability at all. Waste of time.
Certain things in gym class. Never in my 74 years have I had to climb a rope to the ceiling of any room.
I always said they should have had a brief course on how to use the telephone.
When I worked I took thousands of calls over the years and sometimes I wanted to bang my head on a wall.
Me: Good morning, law office
Caller: Who's this?
Me: law office
Caller: Is he there?
Me: law office
Caller: Do you have the number for the deli next to you? Yes, that was a real call.
Yikes.

Phys Ed for sure. I had swimming the first hour and my hair was a mess the rest of the day. The caps were useless. Our instructor, I swear she was a drill sargeant, made us dunk our heads 100 times before the start of the class. I know it was to make sure we got our hair wet. Funny, but all the phys ed teachers looked like and were built like men.....at least the ones I had.
As far as the gymnastic class, we had a girl that fell, straddling the balance beam. That poor, sweet girl never walked the same again. It must have damaged her pelvis.
Not everyone is cut out for athletics. It should be an elective.

What is "reading class?" And you had to sit in the same class for 5 years - from third to end of eighth grade? Wasn't that boring for you?
I didn't like Science classes, and PE.

For me it was Home Ec. The year I had it was the last year students had to take it. I already knew what was being taught. By the time I took the class in seventh grade I had already been taking care of my mom's house and her children for a year. The teacher kept telling me if I was right handed I needed to use my right hand to do things. Well, I am right handed and somethings are more comfortable for me to do with my left hand.
I loved school. I was the kid crying on the last day of school. With being school out opened the door to my mom's abuse all the time. I was safe at school.

I ended up in a tumbling class in high school (I did not want in that class). I could not even turn a cartwheel. All the other girls would be flipping and doing all these fabulous moves and I could not do it. But, instead of being laughed at they all felt sorry for me. My classmates would encourage me and were very sweet and understanding when I was clumsy and ungraceful. The teacher passed me with a 70 (I think the teacher felt sorry for me also). But happily I have never been asked to do any tumbling moves as an adult.

Reading class consisted of reading a book on your own in class, then answering questions about what you read afterwards.
My school tested you on your reading ability and you read books based on your level of comprehension.
I scored a level 8 in the third grade. The eight grade books were kept in that class room, so I would go there for reading and get a book. Most were short stories. I read the book, answered the questions, and moved on to another book. There were books in each level...beginner, intermediate and advanced.
There were hundreds of books. Yes, by the time I was in eight grade, I was bored. I read real books at home.
I have a much older sister who read romance novels. I used to sneak into them and read them too. I learned to read fast so I could finish the book and return it before I got caught.
I got quite the education reading books with content way too advanced for my age.
I can finish an average paper book book (novel) in one or two days.
I read a lot and retain most of what I read. Before I started school, all I wanted to do was read. Once I learned how, I used to argue I didn't need to go to school anymore. I could learn from a book at home. It didn't work. I was made to attend school.
I still read in all my free time...either from a book, kindle, iPad anything I can get my hands on.
I am thankful that at my age (70) I do not need readers. I can even thread a needle. I have been blessed.
I loved science and PE too. I hated geography and history...hated all those dates I had to remember.
I also taught my kids to read early. By the time they went to kindergarten, they were reading by themselves above grade level.

Doesn't matter if the kid was in a public or private school; it's about physical fitness and their vulnerability.
Sending young people out into the world with no basic physical skills would be a huge mistake, even if only to run away from a mugger.
