Re: Did you ever do the math?

Take tips.   Restaurants give you a chart to figure 15% and 20%.  All you do is take 10% and add half of that figure to get 15%.  They shouldn't graduate kids now days if they can't get this concept or are not able to make change.  What DO they teach for 12 years?

I do not think one young person at a register could count the change back to you.  You may get some older people that will.  It is rather sad because a register telling what change to give back does not give you a chance to think for yourself.

Re: Did you ever do the math?

When I was a kid, my mother went to the local grocery store.  Something she wanted to buy was priced at 8 cents a can, or 25 cents for three.  When she got to the register, she told the cashier to ring them up individually,  The cashier insisted that they were three for 25 cents.  Mom had a tough time getting through to the cashier that the "deal" cost more than the individual cans.

Years ago, I had a colleague in a good job, earning good money.  But, my phone rang every time she had to calculate a percentage.  She had no clue how to do it, and knew that I'd do it quickly for her.

Yes, more than once but it doesn't bother me.

when school dropped cursive writing that was plain stupid.

I guess we will become a country of X for your signature. My DD has had to teach her3 kids on how to print and write their names.

@Katcat1 I have been at registers and witnessed older people who couldn't count back change. Why is this a young vs old thing? My 10 year old son can count back change very well as well as tell time on an analog clock.

Re: Did you ever do the math?

@DJs mom  You are lucky can count back change.  Any young person I came across did not have a clue.  Why?  Because they are brought up with calculators, computers, etc.  Don't take offense.

Re: Did you ever do the math?

@Katcat1 I am not taking offense at all. My son was brought up on calculators, computers and smart phones, it still doesn't mean he can't count back change or all of the other kids in his class. I am not lucky he can do this, it is what he was taught. i dislike when people say young people can't do things and assume older folks can. I bet as many young people you have come across that couldn't count back change, I have experienced as many older persons who could not do it either.

@depglass

I am afraid they are teaching 12 year olds algebra and probability instead life skills math.

What state do you live in?

I will find you a site that gives the mandatory curriculum in math for that grade level.
