Did I make a mistake?????!!!!! (relationship related)

Someone new that I like wants to develop a relationship with me, the feeling is mutual but:

I am not ready(too much going on right now)I told him perhaps in the future like Sept.

I broke it off... because I didn't want to string him along,which would not be fair.

He envisioned us dating this summer.

Should I have just tried to stay even though this is not a good time,or was postponing things when life is smoother the right thing to do?

I may have lost him even before things have even started.{#emotions_dlg.crying}

All input welcome(except bashers lol)
