Re: Demise of the Paper Check?

If I were audited, I would get a printed statement from the credit union, like showing donations, @Q-Checker. I am an unlikely candidate for a review anymore though.

Re: Demise of the Paper Check?

[ Edited ]

A lot of places are now charging a fee to use a credit card.  It's the CC processing fee that businesses used to pay, but now they're passing that cost onto the consumer.  But, they'll accept cash or a check with no fee. It's the reason I usually have a checkbook on me.  Thel alterations place and one of the nurseries I often go to are two examples.  Also, there was a restaurant tha pulled that on me.  I'm not sure where they had it posted.  My daughter says they sometimes have it in small print at the bottom of the menus.

First, they wanted us to go cash-less, but now maybe not.  I heard on some TV show the other day that the younger generation is embracing cash.

So, they really should make up their minds instead of just scr---ing the customer all the time.

ETA: I didn't read all the other comments, so I may be repeating someone else's.

Humm, how will I pay my lawn man?  Cash?  That will be a pain in the rear.

@monicakm  Venmo is what most use for those types of things.

If any business you deal with only accepts paper checks for payment,  I'm fairly certain that if the Federal banking system stops processing and clearing paper checks they will quickly and happily adapt and resort to another means of accepting your payment.

If they want to get paid and stay in business they'll figure it out.

I don't like the idea of having my CC number all over the internet. I get bills, I write a check and mail it. Works for me.

I realize it's no comfort to people who don't want change, but please do the research.  It's actually much less safe to send a check than online bill payments.

Checks are vulnerable to forgery, alterations, and varying forms of theft.  Theft can be from stealing mail, manually copying bank account routing and account number, check washing (altering the dollar amount and/or the payee), etc.  There are so many modern fraud tactics that make checks unsafe.

Perhaps set up one bill payment electronically to try to get used to the process.  There may be no paper options soon.

Yes, I thought of that. But I'm thinking humans don't get to see all of the checks flying by, probably in a machine or something. Anyway, so far so good.

@Judaline

Anyone you write a check to can just take a picture of it, and they have your routing and account number (and often address) forever.

Seems to me that if they have already stopped making pennies, at some point, check writing will also be going the way of the dodo bird.

@Tinkrbl44   I must say I never thought about that.  🤔

Re: Demise of the Paper Check?

I want choices.  I reallly, really like "choices"  (incl *all* choices in life)   Yeah, includes choices of writing checks, in some cases too.

THANKS for all info, folks.  Much appreciated.  Woman Very Happy

I have only had time to read about half of the replies on this thread, but I have not seen anyone say that a significant value of check writing is the hard copy they provide for tax records in the case of  an audit. Receipts, or thank you letters, are not consistently received from charities, and hard copy receipts are not always received for other tax deductible expenditures. Without a printer or smart phone, I need either hard copy receipts or a photo of a cancelled check from my bank, which I consistently receive, as proof for the deduction on my retutn. I am a proud low-tech old lady with many legal tax deductions each year, and I do not think that the govt. should complicate, or add expenses to my right to deduct specific items  on my return by requiring that I acquire new unwanted technology to "prove" my deductions in the event of an audit. If they do, then the unwanted phone and printer should be deductible!

@Q-Checker  If hard copy checks go by the wayside, businesses, including charitable organizations, that aren't currently up to date with technology will quickly adapt.

Just like the IRS does even now, you will be able to provide all your critical evidence via electronic transactions that can all be proof of payment:

  • bank statements
  • email confirmations
  • credit card statements
  • transaction history statements from Digital Wallets like PayPal, Venmo, or Cash App

Re: Demise of the Paper Check?

I rarely write checks.  I have to for my hair appointments.  They refuse to take credit cards.  So I'm forced to do that.  It will one check for a whole month.  So it's not that bad. But I pay everything through my credit card. I never liked writing checks, so I'm glad we have the ability to pay online.
