I spent 8 years there growing up.  I loved it.

I live in Maryland so the Delaware beaches are not far from me. I've been to Rehoboth and Bethany many, many times. My dream is to retire to Bethany. There's just something about the atmosphere down there that I love. I haven't been to Lewes or Dewey though. Sadly I probably won't get down there this year.

I must share one story, from the last time we were there.

We are coming from NY across the George Washington to the Turnpike and Garden State.

I was not watching the signs and my sweet DH must of been in space because all of a sudden I noticed we were on the Parkway going through Newark, this mishap added at least 45 minutes to our trip, additional traffic near Atlantic City and we missed our Ferry, had to wait over two hours in Cape May, we did have a great lunch. Trust me I have been super aware not to make this error again

@Cumbercookie13

I know the feeling Bethany Beach is a front runner for retirement, I know there are a lot of planned communities. We have stayed at Sea Colony but that is not a first choice to live full time

Bethany Beach is peaceful, family oriented, and serene as far as lodging.  Dewey has a lovely museum for those "rainy days."    I would stay clear of Rehoboth.  If you are bored, drive south to Ocean City--their Boardwalk is approx. 33 blocks in length, and fun for 'people watching', and peruse beach-style clothing shops.  Enjoy and let us know about your adventures when you return!

that is interesting @mercyMe.

when we feel like going to the boardwalk we usually choose rehoboth instead of ocean city. we do love the small boardwalk in bethany though.

we generally stay away from dewey during the in season other than driving through it......it is more of the high school/college crowd and it gets ROWDY to say the least.

@I am still oxox - Our second home! I've been going since I was very young and I've seen a lot of changes. You said you're not really beach people. If you like nature, visit Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes (just past the ferry). There are two "trails" there - a wooded one and an oceanside one. Neither one is that "taxing" and both are a lot of fun. You can also see Ft. Miles and climb the observation towers that were used during WWII. Fort Miles was an active army post during WWII, and served as a R&R getaway for soldiers stationed at Ft. Meade, MD and other places and their families until the 1990's. You can take a  guided tour of the bunkers that are still there.

If you want a place for fantastic seafood that is relaxing and away from the typical busy places - you can sit outside or inside - look at Fish On in Lewes. We might see you there!

I'd give anything to see Straight No Chaser. Have fun! Smiley Happy

@beach-mom

We actually built our vacation around their concert at the Freeman Stage, I read their schedule and I know my DH loves the group so we booked 5 nights around the concert.

@mercyMe

We went to Rehoboth twice during our trips and it was a bit to much like Rockaway Beach, the parking there is horrible.

We love Bethany and Ocean City and the drive between the two is not bad, it is a good chance to relax and enjoy the water and the pools

Re: Delaware Shore

[ Edited ]

Jill Bauer's new beach house is in Delaware on the bay.  LOL

Have a great time.  Going to either the beaches in Delaware or somewhere along the Jersey Shore is on my list of places I'd like to vacation.
