judgejudith ~ Thankful that it was the side of your car, and not through the windshield. The car can be repaired. You can not be replaced. Take Care.

I don't like driving at night. Seems as though that's when they are crossing roads, etc. Although I've seen them during the day, too, but easier to spot ahead of time, hopefully.

Oh dear. You weren't driving a Dodge Ram were you?

I believe deer are from the class of mammals. They appear to like Dodge vehicles; one ran into the side of my Intrepid many years ago. Fortunately, the deer stood up looking a bit stunned and ran off. My car door suffered a sizeable dent.

We have a lot of deer. One ran out in front of me a few years ago. It happened so fast. All I saw was a flash of white tail. I jammed my brakes on and luckily he made it across, just kicked his back leg up and broke my fog light and bumper bracket. My husband fixed it himself. I was so thankful I didn't hurt or kill the deer or wreck my car. I had a Dodge Durango at the time so I was up higher than a regular car. My neighbor totaled his car hitting a deer.
I didn't know that, either. So people who eat venison are eating rodents??? Ewww
I've had some close calls with deer, they are aplenty here, often running in herds. We have deer whistles on our cars and haven't hit one (nor been hit by them) yet.

Deer are not rodents. Deer are a part of the deer family, Family Cervidae. This taxonomic family excludes rodents. RedTop meant that they are like rodents in her area.

Perhaps RedTop meant that they as plentiful and troublesome as rodents. I don't think she meant it literally.
I hit mine late one night on Interstate 40 in Eastern Oklahoma. I was driving about 70 mph in my 3-month old. SUV. I looked up and there was a line of does across the highway. I knew if I swerved I'd probably roll the car so I hit the first one head on. It just missed the airbag sensor, swung around and hit the door. I stopped at the next exit, assessed the damage, called the state police and we continued on. It cost $6,000 to fix the car.

Several years ago I was returning from the hospital w/a family member who was there for tests. It was about noon and I was in no way in a hurry. I was driving parallel to a creek with steep banks - two lane road - when I noticed a deer standing on the creek side of the guardrail. I slowly tried to drive past and suddenly he/she decided to jump the guardrail and ran into the passenger side front bumper. Yes, basketball sized dent and damage to the front headlight, not to mention fur stuck to bumper. Costly repair - entire front bumper is one piece. Deer didn't survive and I was traumatized for some time. Seemed to me to be unusual to see deer moving at that time of day. Maybe he was ill.
