Re: Deep planing and scaling at dentist-Help

Hi all my friends! I survived Part 1! It has been 3 hours and the shots are just starting to wear off, teeth and gums are sore, and there is still some bleeding around a few teeth which I hope will stop. Just an update and another big thanks for all your support!

Congratulations, Shop! Maybe swishing your mouth with cold water will help.

jaburg I have a question for you and it may sound silly, but it is bugging me. I feel good today except after the shots wore off yesterday, it feels like something is stuck in my molar. It doesn't hurt just annoying. I can't get anything out! Could it be just trauma and a little swelling? My next appointment is Tuesday so I can have them check it then. It is just driving me crazy!!! Thanks

My husband has had this done a couple of times -- not fun, but necessary for him, and it really improved the health of his gums and teeth. I'm glad they're giving you "deadening" shots. If you're extremely anxious, why not talk with them about taking some anti-anxiety medication to make things easier -- or perhaps using "laughing gas" during the procedure?

Re: Deep planing and scaling at dentist-Help

Glad to see that your experience was positive shops! There are a couple of things that could cause the feeling that you are feeling. I am assuming that you are feeling something between 2 teeth rather than on the chewing surface of the tooth. Have you tried a water pik in the area? Or a sonicare? Often times during RPC some of the removed (loosened) calculus will remain the sulcus...or gum line area.It doesn't hurt anything and will work its way out alone or by mechanical action. For mechanical action I like sonicare and waterpik as I mention. 2 other theraputic aids that work nicely are both Butler products...GUM soft-picks or GUM Eez-Thru. Also warm saline rinses are beneficial. Soft circular brushing will help with the swelling. This is a common concern for patients after RPC. Keep in mind, that we have essentially changed your oral tissue by removing the calculus and necrotic tissue, so it is bound to feel different for a few days.

Good for you for taking care of your problem and having a positive feel about the procedures. As jaburg mentioned..it is usually "much ado about nothing!" Meaning so easy!

Thanks GoodStuff and gubby1! All of you are awesome. Round 2 is tomorrow. Doing okay except teeth on that side really sensitive that I could jump out of my skin. I will talk to the dentist about it in the morning. Following all your suggestions and hope I can eat if this other side gets sensitive, too. I realize there are more serious problems that people have, but this just upset me so much. Have a great Monday and thanks

Shop...it is real common to have thermal sensitivity after RPC. The calculus that was removed had been acting kind of like insulation on your teeth so you didn't feel thermal changes. Ask your DDS for an RX for Prevident toothpaste. It comes in 2 formulas. The one I would recommend for you is in the pink bottle and is labeled ""sensitive"". It works wonders. Another good one is MI Paste. They both work really fast!

Re: Deep planing and scaling at dentist-Help

My second side was postponed due to the bad weather until March. I guess some of the staff could not make it in due to the snowstorm. That was fine with me! It's been a week and still having sensitive and discomfort! I asked if that was normal, but never got an answer back! Does it take long to settle down? Will salt water rinses help? I am using a sensitive toothpaste and prescription rinse. If I had gotten the second side done, I wouldn't be able to eat!!!!!
