Declaration of Independence Read to Troops

On this day, July 9, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to George Washington's troops in New York City.  John Hancock of the Continental Congress had one copy of the Declaration sent so that the assembled army could hear it.

They gathered in a large Commons, which is apparently very close to today's New York City Hall!   Excited citizens joined the troops in celebration;   they were led by a local NYC patriot by the name of Isaac Sears.  This was against a backdrop of landed British troops preparing to fight the Americans.

Can you just imagine the impact that had on the troops...and at such a pivotal time in our history.

Re: Declaration of Independence Read to Troops

NPR does an annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. Very cool.
