Debit card fraud ?

I just started using a debit card last year . I love not having to write checks. But have been reading about the fraud at Michaels stores. How do you keep this from happening? My debit card is a debit/ credit card. So whether I say debit or I say credit, the money comes right out of my account. No paying a credit card bill. If I say credit, is this safer since they don't have the PIN number? I guess I should ask my bank next time I am in. Thanks for any info.
