A first cousin just died unexpectedly and the obituary mentioned no cause of death.

We assume it was heart related because the family requested donations to be made to the American Heart Association, but that's just speculation.

He was cremated, so unless an autospy was done before, I doubt the immediate family knows for sure.

Many families request the cause omitted (even if they know) for various reasons having to do with privacy. Many Covid deaths went unreported.

@jackiejenny they should receive a death certificate stating cause of death even if there is no autopsy.

I believe she/he is saying that I’m the one with the “problem”.

Pay no attention @Allthingsgirly67. You get all sorts of opinions here from strangers. And I "get" your curiosity. I think when someone you care about dies, it is human nature to wonder why.

I think that the trend to not state the cause of death makes people a little less empathetic. When you know why I think it makes one more sympathetic and more aware of certain conditions and let’s you be more reflective.

@Allthingsgirly67   The cause of death is really none of your business and should never be listed simply to satisfy public curiosity.  All you need to know is that the person has passed away.

I don't think it's a trend.  I do genealogy so I read a LOT of obits and Cause of Death is not commonly included even going back.  Luckily for me, a lot of death certificates can be found online although not current ones.

I don't think "died unexpectedly" is code for suicide.  It just means they didn't die of a known and possibly lingering illness.

That’s interesting because I have found that the cause is often stated in obituaries especially in newspapers.

I agree.  While it's up to the family and should remain private if that is their wishes, sometimes when I hear such terrible news I can't help but wonder why...what happened?  Could it have been prevented?  Is this a death that could happen to either you or your family?

I agree that it's just human nature.  I don't think we are entitled to know the reason why, but as a caring person you are just curious.
