This remark is soooo typical of you. What makes a "real" shrink? He's a full college graduate and is a psychologist. He graduated from a Texas college, and also  received a doctorate which is the highest you can earn. The only difference between him and a psychiatrist is that he doesn't prescribe medications. For his work, he didn't want or need to. Other than that, they are the same.

Why are you always so negatively judgemental ?

This has been a ongoing problem for him for years. I guess he hasn't hit his personal bottom yet and chose to turn his life around. Until he chooses to do this this downward spiral will continue. People everyday choose to dump their addictions and seek help and regain their lives. This is a choice not a disease. Good luck as it's not easy... One day at a time.

Esmeralda,

You been a poster for a long time. It's hard for me to realize that you don't believe alcoholism is a true disease, but just a "choice".

But I am glad that obviously you have never had to live with it first- hand or you wouldn't have formed this opinion.

I also do not think dealing with your personal problems in  a public format like a TV program or a reality show is in the patient's best interests. For that reason, Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, and others of that ilk have lost any credibility with me.

As for David Cassidy, I hope he gets the help he needs to get his life back on track.

redhead87, I agree with all you've said about this horrible disease/addiction on this thread.  But my first response was referring to post #3 which referred to him as a "drunk" and "he is just a disappointment".  IMO, that is clearly the most judgemental and least understanding of the posts on this thread.   Esme's would be second, saying it's a "choice"!  If there were a "thumbs down", that's what I would have given post #3.  But you "hearted" it, and I am curious as to why. Hope you don't mind my asking....

He needs to get some treatment and to stop driving when under the influence.  I agree that addiction and whatever psychological elements encourage addiction are not the "fault" of the person afflicted but he can't cure himself by making resolutions.  He should sell his car or hire a driver with the proceeds of his house sale.

Look at the tragedy of his father's death, which was alcohol related. If a terrifying example could "cure" a person, that would have cured DC.

The sale of his house may be a way of beginning over.  Bankruptcy isn't pleasant, but it does not approach the hell of addiction, which has claimed lives in my own extended family, as in most families.

David's Dad, Jack Cassidy was a raging alcoholic, as well as Bipolar.  Maybe Jack started drinking  to balance the bipolar, which is very common.  I believe many of these addictions are inherited and are a true disease, as well as the AMA..  Jack's dad was an alcoholic as well.  Jack's drinking was notorious and very, very sad.  It led to his death.  he was burned alive in his penthouse, when he fell alseep in a stupor. He had tried and failed to quit many times.

It is my belief that the choice to drink may only be in the first drink.  After that the DNA takes over.  It is sad but so true.
