and here we go again, another data breach:
The names, birthdays, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses and more for as many as 80 million people may have been stolen after Anthem, the nation's second-largest health insurance provider, suffered a massive data breach, the company said in a statement.

Paper is always better. A lot less security problems for the public at large, and more work for the perpetrators.

anyone have anthem health? they are the second largest health insurer in the country.

I don't have them.
Romary paper may be better but nothing is done on paper anymore. Prescriptions are all done on the computer, test results are released via computer, pre-op surgery histories are completed on-line, registration for surgery is completed on-line, test orders are done on-line, etc.

we still use two older doctors who use mostly paper, but paper is becoming a dinosaur. even when you fill out all of the paperwork it gets entered into the computer.

I needed a prescription so I stopped into my doctor's office to pick it up. They told me the computers were down so I'd have to come back. I asked them why I couldn't get a handwritten script. The 2 women looked at each other then looked at me like they'd never heard of such a thing.

Holy cow! I'm getting old. I just don't get/can't stand the way we can't function today without this technology. It's sickening.
Quick story. My son was at a high school basketball game, player hurt, and taken to the hospital. I went to pick him up after the game, and he was slightly upset, and said that he would like a girl to call him if anyone heard anything about his condition. I said to go back in the building and give her our phone number. He came back and said, she couldn't take my number, she didn't have her phone on her at the moment.
WHAT??? You are in a school building and can't find a pencil and paper to write down someone's number for later. We are raising a generation of people who can't think beyond what their phone/computer/ipad etc. can do for them.

Why are people surprised? It's happens, it's always going to happen. This is the new reality. Our lives are out there in cyber space. Everything is done online now, every facet of our lives in someone's data base or up in that cloud. So, there will always be security breeches. Companies can and do try to prevent these things from happening but the information thieves are sometimes one step ahead of them.
