@shoesnbags You are SO right about what I was doing and where I was, lol.
I can absolutely understand that those who live there and have families there see it and celebrate it in a way that outsiders/visitors would/do not. The only parades I remember involved being in the streets ourselves and doing things to earn those beads. I don't remember cars being around the area....everyone walked. Talking the early 80's here....
I do believe that so much emphasis is placed on the booze, drugs, and show us your %&^$ aspect of the celebration that we forget that there are many other aspects to Mardi Gras. I know I did and my apologies for that.

Perkup-and anybody else who would want to go to 'Gras " one day with children- there are communities outside of Orleans Parish that do keep it clean/ or try to-and there are areas that celebrate outside of New Orleans such as Mobile Alabama. I've never been to Mobile for Mardi Gras, but Southern Living has reviews going back a couple of years.
Perkup, I know you know that-I grew up there and it was fun-but it just gets too crazy and gross for me at my age!
Who was Grand Marshal of Endymion this year?
It is tragic-and what's worse is that unless the Carrollton run for the street car was dropped, there was transportation-easy-affordable-maybe even free these days during the last few days of Carnival.....that kid did not even have to drive....
May everyone "pass a good time" and be safe there. A special shout out to the PD and EMS services: they have /had a number of tough situations.

Enjoyed your post, love NO.
I know it goes without saying that they are part of the Police force, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the police horses of the city of NO, who are so patient, and do such important work in the parades. ![]()

Drythe, the mounted police do an excellent job and they know how to pick their battles: there you are surrounded by massive crowds that could easily start-well, anything....and to make matters worse, many are drunk or high....this is not like NYC on New Year's where they can somewhat block off Times Square...no metal detectors-open containers everywhere. They have an extremely dangerous job-as do all men and women in uniform.
