DIfference Between Sun Spots and Skin Cancer?

how can you tell a difference? My doctor looked at a spot on my arm and said it was a sun spot. I asked how she could tell and she said something about it being irregular, darker in color for skin cancer. It's been awhile and now I don't remember. any tips on what to look for?
