Growing up we were always told carrots were good for our eyesight. I am guilty of using tissues to clean the lenses of my glasses. Reading in dim light was always a no, no. And then I read the following in the Reader's Digest.
1. It has always been believed that carrots are good for the eyes but this is not true. According to eye doctors, the best things for your eyes are leafy greens, salmon, eggs, citrus and berries.
2. It was also stated that they know when you are cheating on an eye exam. How they know wasn't stated.
3. Using tissues to clean your eye glasses is not a good idea. Paper is made of wood, and it will scratch your lenses. Using a silky material is recommended instead.
4. Reading in the darker hours of the day isn't as terrible for your eyes as you think. Reading in dim light won't hurt your eyes. The worst thing that can happen is that you get a headache.
5. Stop taking advice from the Internet and do not sleep wearing your contacts.

My opthalmologists never discussed diet and vision, #1 surprises me. Yes, I know 2-5. Either from my opthalmologist or from reading medical journals.

I have contacts that are FDA approved for 30 days of continuous wear. I rarely keep them in for more than a couple of days though as I’m a swimmer and contacts don’t mix well with pool chemicals or salt water. My ophthalmologist is well aware of this - he prescribed them.

Number 5 cracked me up. We are supposed to stop taking advice from the Internet but taking advice from a magazine is okay? LOL

Growing up I always heard carrots are good for your eyes but I never heard this from my optometrist or opthalmologist. One time, he jokingly said I must be eating my carrots after an exam. I've never cleaned my glasses with tissues (unless in a pinch) because I figured they could get scratched. I use a cloth that I purchased at my eye doctor's office. I think I've purchased them from the Wal-Mart optometry department as well. I can't read in bright light as there is a glare from the light so I've always read with the lights dimmed anyway.

Not true in my case. My lenses are made of glass. They don't scratch.

A lot of people take advice from the internet, magazines, etc etc. It's stupid to do when 99% of it is bogus anyway. I'll bet the dr was using the internet as an example.

Thanks for the advice. It's like all these diets...depends on who you read as to what's good or not good for you. I remember my Dad telling my brother at the dinner table that carrots would grow hair on your chest and thinking, if that's the case, I don't want to eat carrots!!!!
