I need the ""grid""! Can't imagine life without electricity. I've had to endure enough power outages to know how much electricity really means to me! But more power to those who can do it.

More ""power"" to those who choose to live without electricity?

Was Yuban, then changed to Plaid Pants due to forum upgrade, and apparently, I'm back to being Yuban.

My best friend from HS is very intelligent, but a little eccentric.

She and her DH live on a farm in the North Country in NY. They raised 7 children.

They are both engineers and have their own solar and wind power for electricity, septic and well for water and wood stoves for heat.

She stopped working when the kids were young and dabbled with how to be more self-sufficient. They have chickens, grow their own wheat and grind their own flour (with a hand mill).

She now works from home and her DH is a consultant who travels the world. For a while, they lived in S Korea.

What she has taken TOO far, IMO, is lack of medical care. Her teeth and cracked and several are missing. Until our 40th reunion, she wouldn't see a MD. Our other friend is a cardiologist and INSISTED she see a doctor and get her health issues resolved.

I have several neighbors off the grid,they use solar power mostly,most have a creek for water and the haul water in winter.Wood heat. It is totally doable. Not for me personally,especially those roads up and and down the Winter,I prefer being a flat lander.

Wow, I want to clarify my answer. Log home in the woods, if we win the lottery, I'm talking multi-million dollar home, with all the bells and whistles. I'm not crazy. LOL {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

Be the change you want to see in the world. It will make you happier. And stop watching tv news.

ITA!! Just a few minutes ago a news person on a channel I rarely watch exuded an over-the-top emotionally charged expression that had me smh over another woe-is-us topic-- that was nothing more than a filler story. I feel sorry for all of us sometimes, minds at the mercy of the constant barrage to keep people tuned in.

As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side. We live in the suburbs in a very quiet but woodsy neighborhood on an acre of land. I love it. We have the best of both worlds. Only about 20 minutes from shopping, grocery stores, parks, ocean, etc. Maybe you could just take a vacation for about a month to see if that type of living appeals to you before you make the big decision. It's easy enough to shut off the media if that adds to the problem.

I wouldn't consider it because of the craziness of the world but it does make sense to be prepared for a major power outage. Example have generator and gasoline on hand to fuel it(that would be difficult) and a way to pump water out of the ground, canned food. A wood burning stove also.

We see stories at times that say that a cyber attack could mess up our electrical grid big time. Also saw a story on the weather channel the other night something about the magnetic fields flipping or something and that scientists are working on a way to keep our electricity up and running after such an event.

Medications required for maintaining life are a good thing to have an extra supply of too.

That would be heaven for me!
