It has been very interesting watching the bucks. They play it "cool" as they sneakily get closer to the does. Then they light heartedly chase...not a full on run. That will change soon.

So you are not going outside with them?

@goldensrbest not really...the rut is starting. So most of our pictures will be taken from inside the house for the next 2 months except for a few that may be taken when we are on the patio and they start appearing. Then we will go inside.

@MamaWick .... forgive me but, I am not familiar with this ...... what do you mean when you said “the rut is starting” ? ..... is that when they start to mate? & do they become “mean” during that time? ..... Thanks 🥰

@January121 Yes...the rut is mating season. It's not that the become mean, it's that they are oblivious to their surroundings. A buck could chase a doe right through our patio. That is why so many deer are hit and killed on highways and roads.

Yes, the rut is mating season. It is also when the deer's meanest predator, mankind, sets out to hunt deer. Humans understand the rut puts the deer on the prowl, hence easier for man to track down the animals. I live where hunting is very popular. It is called a "sport," imagine that if you will.

@maximillian. Every time I see the majestic Buckley's head with those antlers I think to myself how appalling it is that some people have deer head "trophies" on their walls. I once had a meeting at an attorney's office where he proudly had deer heads displayed on the wall. 😪 I could barely get through the meeting.
@Pearlee @maximillian I agree with you both.
It makes me sick to think that this "sport" involves slaughtering a helpless animal.
I grew up in a place where hunting is very popular also. There was a "deer head" proudly displayed on the wall that I had to look at every day in my house.
I loathed every minute of it.

Thank you as always for sharing your beautiful pictures. It is just the thing to warm my heart on this cold, rainy dreary day on the east coast.
Woofs to Cricket. I would love to snuggle with her.

Okay, I have an even weirdo scenario for you. As I stated, hunting is a big part of the local culture where I live. Now, to state this up front: this has been CHANGED. This no longer exists. However, a couple of decades ago, in our local YMCA, there existed a so-called "Animal Room. " A wealthy and well-regarded and prominent banker was also a fierce hunter. He made hunting trips all over the world. He had the heads mounted of his prize animals. Then, in our local community, he donated a LOT of money to a building fund for the YMCA. So, as a provision I guess, the YMCA displayed the mounted animal heads in a special "Activity" room. Yes, they even called it the "Animal Room." Not the "Dead Animal Room," just the "Animal Room." YUK. They even took kids in there for activities. Now, that donor has died. There is new administration in the YMCA. No more Animal Room. Praise the Lord.
