My father lost a brother and a cousin that day.

Sorry Abbey. My father and my mom's relatives went. All came back, but different. More mature about life (putting it nicely).

We owe these brave men, and all of the men and women who worked so hard on planning and supporting the invasion, a tremendous debt.

Hearing the stories of these brave men has been very inspiring.

I listened to the original media broadcast this morning. It was absolutely incredible to hear the first hand account from the media back then. It was so different than now. The country was united, the media was patriotic and the president was openly praying to God for the safety of our men. This is a generation that we will not likely see again in our lifetimes. I am proud that my father served as well as many of my relatives.

Brutal doesn't describe what occurred that day, or I suppose in any war -- but that battle and the others of that time are something else. We don't see much film about other wars that are less justifiable, or not at all justifiable. All warriors have similar memories of destruction and death, and come home changed forever.

Yes, would like to underscore what the O.P. is saying.

In my country, the Netherlands, the people thought that this was the actual ending of the war, but instead, it took yet another year, we were liberated by the Americans and Canadians on May 5, 1945.

The D-Day was called and translated in Dutch as Crazy Tuesday...

Have a good one and let's stand still a moment for this awesome event.

Sadly, it wasn't the end of the war and your country suffered horribly in the months that followed.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.
