I have an antenna and get about two dozen stations...all the major networks, PBS, QVC and HSN.

I don't record anything.  If there are two or more things I want to watch, I make a decision.  Sometimes I will watch the other(s) online, if it's that important to me.

We used to have a satellite dish; but gave it up 10+ years ago and don't miss it. It's just TV.

I also have Netflix...DVD by mail and streaming.

Thanks for all the replies.  Anyone else?  I also heard there was a new Tivo that could be helpful.  Anyone know about it?  Tivo Bolt I think.

Interesting about TiVo Bolt but I thought you were looking to cut costs.  This will take you in the opposite direction.

Is the cost your issue or something else?  I personally will never give up cable or DirectTV. There are some things that to me are worth the price and that is one of them. That being said though I do try and get the best deal I can.

I had a friend who got tired of his ever growing cable bill and called and threatened to cancel it. Funny when he did that, all of a sudden they were able to get him some type of very basic cable programming for around $30.00 per month.

I am getting ready to contact cable because our 1 year promotion we were on ran out and our bill went up $40.00 a month.  At this point, DH and I are prepared to go back to Direct TV if we have to, in order to get a lower price.

First of all cable isn't even available where I live so cutting the cable cord isn't an option.

Roku, sling tv, hulu , netflix etc require wifi which is only available thru satellite and would cost more and offer less than directv.

Checked out the HD TV antenna and would get networks except CBS.

Thank goodness for directv, I guess. Of course without it I'd have lots more time to shovel snow which it appears will need to be done all week Smiley Happy

??? I have all of the options you mentioned and it is half the cost of Directv.

I just checked excede.com the popular satellite Internet here rates. They are $149/mo after the first 3 months for 30G which is the least you'd need for streaming much less internet, email etc. Netflix, hulu etc would be in addition to that. Curious what satellite Internet service you have?

Roku has the qvc and hsn channel apps.  And sometimes roku does have cable channels like lifetime or fx but you have to be a cable or satellite customer to see full programs.

Where I live qvc and hsn both have over the air channels but I can't get them.

I'm very happy with antenna tv and hulu Netflix and amazon prime but I don't think it's for everyone.

To answer the question several posters had for me (the original poster):  I'm asking about cutting the cord because I'm tired of the rate hikes (a new one is coming soon for DirecTV) and having to pay for all those channels I don't use.  A lot of people keep services because of sports packages or children's packages.  I need neither.  I could take the same money I pay each month for DirecTV and buy a Tivo (if necessary) and an antenna and Netflix, etc.  I already have Prime.  Problem is, I need a DVR because my viewing habits/time is a crazy mess.  I had Tivo way back before they divorced from DirecTV.  I loved their box and format, etc.  I hate DirecTV's box and their corporate attitude.  I just want the most for my money.  Problem is, the more I search, the more I realize there are real problems with some solutions.  It seems Sling and Hulu can only be used on one TV at a time.  You can hook them into all your devices, but can only watch one streaming.  That won't work at my house, so the cost for those services is doubled if I chose them.  I already have Roku and hubs has Apple Fire.  I didn't realize Roku had QVC and HSN apps until reading it here.  Will check that out, but still it seems that I won't be able to cut the cord as easily as I'd hoped.  Hope this thread keeps going for awhile, as others may also benefit and we all may learn more.  Thanks again to everyone who has contributed.

Another vote for a Mohu Leaf antenna. I bought the antenna at Best Buy for about $65 bucks. Best idea evah!

I live in rural podunk and bought the 50 mile range antenna. I get about a dozen stations and yes, all HD.

I have a Sony flatscreen in 1080p. Only a couple of years old, the antenna works fine with it as the broadcast channels I get are all HD as well.
