Re: Cursive writing not taught anymore

A local woman of uncommon distinction, a writer and former legislator--  elegant, discerning, probably in her late 80's, sent my son (teenage at the time) a thank-you note.

It was on the occasion of the death of her husband, and our son, who was the visual 'tech' volunteer at our church, helped with visual stuff for her husband's funeral service. She felt he had gone "above and beyond".

The note is a marvel of bold, artistic handwriting.  It does remind one of one of the signers of the Declaration.  It has the feeling of the most flowing, gorgeous calligraphy, yet it seems completely individual, and consistent with the exceptional figure that she cuts in the world...  I can't describe it better than that...

Needless to say, we have kept that note-- mostly for the kind sentiments she expressed, but also for the work of art that it is!

I do think the benefits of teaching cursive will once again be recognized, as will a number of other things that have been thoughtlessly jettisoned.

Re: Cursive writing not taught anymore

I haven’t read all the responses, but I don’t think anyone has mentioned that some states have gone back to teaching cursive so it’s a moot point for some kids.

25 states require cursive. CA and NH passed legislation requiring it. 5 more states have legislation pending.
