Credit/debit card fraud-ALERT!!

I normally don't answer calls from credit card co.,but they left a msg to verify recent charges. When I called, found out there were several fraud charges on my card. Then, today another of my cards called, same thing. I called my bank to check any odd charges with my debit card. they recommended I cancel my debit card & come. Several people I know have also just had this happen, but they aren't local charges. Has anyone had this problem, & how common is it?? I am freaking out over this!!
