Re: Credit Card Numbers Stolen - They Made a New Card

I got a fraud alert from Chase over the weekend. Seems someone had charged $566.00 at Safeway. We rarely use the physical card except for eating out. Mostly use it for online shopping. We had the cards in our possession so I think the card got compromised when we were in Spokane last month and one of the restaurant waiters stole it. I think they must have tried to buy gift cards online because what else do you buy at Safeway where you don't need to have physical possession of the card. I should have my new card today.

Re: Credit Card Numbers Stolen - They Made a New Card

I only use my debit card at my bank's ATM but use my Discover card at the gas pumps all the time. I just received a letter that my card may have been breached. They're not canceling it but will send a new card. They assure me I'm not responsible for any unauthorized charges. I've had my card info stolen in the past & I didn't have to pay but I still feel like they stole from me. I too want them caught & prosecuted. Isn't it sad that no one cares if the thiefs steal- as long as it's under $500? They're given a free pass & they know it! They've got a good gig going-free money. They should be prosecuted regardless of the value & made to pay restitution.

Maybe there should be an organization that will investigate every case & get a % of the money recouped. Seems like it would be a win-win. The banks & credit card companies only pay them if they get restitution. Since they're already writing off $500 every time why not at least try? Maybe there are companies that do this?

Re: Credit Card Numbers Stolen - They Made a New Card

Someone tried to help themselves to $310 of my money by charging a Venmo (a money transfer app that I'd never heard of) transfer to one of my AMEX cards. Within 10 minutes of the attempt, I'd received a text message and phone call from AMEX. Within 20 minutes, I'd talked with a fraud prevention rep, reviewed all of the recent legitimate charges, had the account closed and a new card on the way. About two weeks later, AMEX called to let me know that they'd identified where the transaction had taken place, the individual who did it, and were talking with law enforcement. There's nothing that I need to do as I was never hurt financially, but AMEX is definitely pursuing it.

[ Edited ]

The second time I had a card hacked, it was through online use of a restaurant delivery service. I don't know if it was the service/company or the restaurant itself. I very rarely use my bank card online any more, if ever. Only at places I trust and have a long track record with, like Amazon. The bank said online theft and use is huge because no physical cards are needed.

Skimmers are very easy to install at gas stations, apparently.   I try to use only cash though

Re: Credit Card Numbers Stolen - They Made a New Card

On Tuesday night I checked out our card charges online, and I can't remember what prompted me to do so, but I found three $529.99 charges to an online retailer that we boycott.  This will be our fourth change in four years, and now we're waiting on the new card.  Then I'll have to contact everyone to change over.  I'm seeing the advantage to writing checks.
