Credit Card Fraud - Ugh 😡

[ Edited ]

My Visa CC has had attempted charges on it twice yesterday and today - two attempts for $1.00 and two attempts for $990.  All via Facebook/Meta.  Sometimes I click into ads and I have made a couple of purchases.  I've learned my lesson - no more of that.  If I see something interesting, I'll go through the browser to the website.  My CC company sent me a text to inquire.  I thought it was a scam so I didn't reply to the text. Then I also received an email.  I logged into my CC account through the app and there was an alert asking me if I recognized the charges.  They had already declined the first ones but the thieves were persistent.  The bank is sending me a new card. In the meantime, I had to put DH's card in on my Amazon account as subscription items are staged to ship but haven't been charged.  That could happen any day as sometimes they come ahead of the scheduled delivery date.  Hopefully the new card will be here quickly.

Once the new card comes I'll update everything.  What a hassle. 🙄

Re: Credit Card Fraud - Ugh 😡

I am so sorry this happened to you and understand your frustration.

I personally have never had a CC breach, but my husband has...last year it happened three times.

I had a debit card breach, but fortunately, the theif didn't get a dime.  They tried to spend more than my checking account balance and it was flagged and the credit union contacted me.

When I buy online, I use either PayPal, which I can use with my CC's, checking account,PayPal account or Apple Pay.  This way my CC info is never exposed or needed.

I know there is no guaranteed way to be 100% safe, but we do what we can.

I am glad the thief didn't get any money from you.  I know the financial institution will return your money, but in the end, this costs us all.  No wonder interest rates on CC are high.

This happened to me years ago. Since then. I check my cc daily. I also get text alerts for all charges over a set amount.

@JeanLouiseFinch

So sorry you have to go through this. Hope everything gets resolved quickly.

My husband's credit card was hacked twice. He rarely shops online, and uses his card mostly in restaurants and gas stations. Both times they contacted him about suspicious charges, and sent him a new card.

My credit cards have never been compromised. Sometimes I think that's a miracle considering how much I use them locally and online. I did get a call asking me to confirm a large purchase back in March. It was for the condo we were staying in for our family trip to the beach in May. They wanted confirmation it was legit.

Have a Good Day!

So sorry that happened, I won't shop on Facebook/Meta at all, I've had too many friends with bad scam experiences, even direct messaging has been hacked on Facebook....

@JeanLouiseFinch.  Your fraudulent charges didn't necessarily come from Facebook ads.  I had that happen long before I ever used social media.  This $1.00 charges are a trial to see if the card works.  They preceed bigger charges.

Thankfully, banks are really good at nipping them in the bud.

I had my CC declined when I tried to make a $1600 purchase at Nordstrom in the Philadelphia area.  I hadn't thought to call and advise them I'd be traveling.  Very embarrassing but I got my sister to cover it for me

Re: Credit Card Fraud - Ugh 😡

When I got my credit card bill, there was a $150 charge for Amazon Prime. I don't have an Amazon Prime account. The bank cancelled the credit card and I got a new one within five days. Unfortunately I had to contact all the companies that bill through that card(Netflix, Max, etc) and give them my new number. I had this happen once before. I think it is just part of the hassles we all face, thieves picking your electronic pocket.

So sorry. Been there myself recently, although it was my debit card and had nothing to do with Facebook (not on it). Luckily my bank caught it right away and they didn't get a dime. They were able to print me a new card right there in the bank that same day, too, which was pretty cool. Like you, at first I ignored the texts because I thought it was a scam and my account looked fine when I checked it. (That was because my bank wasn't allowing anything to go through.) After two texts and an automated phone call, I went to my local branch to check it out. Sure enough, fraud was attempted. I hope you get everything resolved quickly!
