I do not see the harm. I think of it as an additional safety measure.

I don't know if this would even be possible, but perhaps having an enforced internet "blind spot" at sidewalk corners would make them look up until they've crossed the street and gone on their way.

 

OTOH, what also comes to mind is a George Carlin observation .....  "It's just God's way of thinning the herd .... ".
