Re: Could You Go Without Shopping For a Year? (Except for Necessities)

We have to keep the economy going and at least you're getting something for your money and not peeing it down a rat hole in a casino or from buying lotto tickets.

I'm not required to keep anyone in business.

Nor do I buy lotto tickets or ever spent a penny at a casino.

I’m going to say no. I don’t shop often but sometimes I go to lunch with my sisters and we go to some of our favorite stores to see and sometimes end up with a really good bargain. I couldn’t pass those great sales up.

The author of this article has gotten through all of 2017 so far, without shopping for anything except necessities. She claims that it has been a liberating experience. I don't think l could do it!

Here's the link to her op-ed piece from The NY Times:

@handygal2 I know, with zero doubt, you couldn't do it...

Interesting reading. I've cut back shopping a lot, but I don't think I could go a year without shopping for anything frivolous at all. I might give it a try and see how long it lasts. I do completely get her realization of all that she already had and didn't need, and her choice to use some of the many items she'd accumulated but stashed 'under the sink'. I also agree with her observation that waiting to obtain something you think you want badly often makes the desire to acquire go away.

Re: Could You Go Without Shopping For a Year? (Except for Necessities)

I tried it a couple of years ago. I tried not to buy any clothes, shoes, or jewelry for a year. I made a little chart to keep track. I did end up buying a few tops and I think 2 pairs of jeans. No shoes or jewelry though, so I feel like I did pretty well. It really did help me cut back and become more careful and mindful when buying clothes. I do think it is very hard to not buy anything new in a new season.

@handygal2  Define "necessities."

Probably though I would need to replace my face wash, moisturizer and Foundation when I run out. I guess that’s not frivolous.

Re: Could You Go Without Shopping For a Year? (Except for Necessities)

Yes i could go without shopping for a year and I have. When I was going through my divorce from my first husband. At the time my 1st marriage ended, I had spine surgery and lost my job and could no longer work anymore. I only bought necessity's for YEARS. Now I am remarried almost 11 years so I do shop now, but I don't go overboard on shopping as a whole, because well I am not that much into shopping.lol. I have a friend who shops every other day and has so many clothes it unreal. She also takes back things. I have never taken any clothing back to a store in my entire life. I do not impulse shop like she does..

@puttypiesmomWhen we go to the casino, we are helping the many people that work there.

That is like saying, that people that eat out all the time are wasting money.
