Costs of shipping presents this year

My DH just took some Christmas packages to be mailed, and I was astounded at some of the costs.

We had an Amazon return for a gift my friend sent to my DD. She already has both of the items that my friend sent to her, so we talked with my friend, and we were going to send it back to Amazon, per her request. Well, at both the USPS and UPS, my DH was told it would cost $15 to send it, even the slowest possible method, no insurance! The gift itself is only $25!

I shipped a very small package to my sister, and it was $20! Only some baby clothes- nothing heavy.

We are going to donate the toy instead of shipping it back. The cost is just too high. I sometimes wonder if online places depend on this to prevent returns.
