For example I see advise typed instead of advice or redeculous instead of ridiculous. I won't correct in public but if there was a way to do it privately I would.
As long as it's not on the annual report for our department, I don't care. I really don't worry about what's on a shopping board.

In the workplace, you ARE your words, so they really need to be correct!
We are not in the workplace here - we are on a chat board.
Personally, I never learned to type - I was more interested in science than English. And in my high school students who were in college prep classes were not taught to type - that was for students who were on a different path.
I'd like to show all those who are so impressed with their ability to type & spell better than I do a strip of monitors and see them pick out the arrhythmias and tell me what the treatments for those are. See - I can do that - in a nanosecond! And, in my profession that was way more important than typing or spelling. BTW - I hope when you or your loved one have your heart attack the nurse can read a monitor and knows what to do about what she/he sees - otherwise they may have perfect typing and spelling on your death certificate.
I don't think the 2 are mutually exclusive. I can read that monitor, mix up a 4:1 concentration Lidocaine drip and calculate how many drops per minute is necessary to infuse 2 mg/min for the patient. But that doesn't mean that nurses should not pay attention to correct spelling and proper grammar.
A simple spelling error can mean the difference in the wrong medication being written when taking & writing a verbal order, etc.
I am also reminded of a malpractice case I consulted on back in the day during block charting and before electronic charting or charting by exception. Unfortunately, this nurse had misspelled multiple words & the grammar used for the charting was horrendous.
When she was on the witness stand, the plaintiff's attorney made her look like an absolute fool over her spelling & grammar. Have to say he was very successful at creating the image to the jury that if this nurse couldn't spell and write, she was dumb enough to be guilty of what they were accusing her of. So I do happen to think it is important for nurses to be able to spell correctly and use correct grammar.
That said, I do see this venue as a place for general everyday conversation. And there is no way I take the pains that I do professionally to check my spelling or grammar when posting here. I care about spelling and grammar, but not enough to feel as if it is my responsibility to correct a fellow poster here.

Is all this defensiveness a sign of insecurity?

You are showing how long it has been since you worked in patient care - nurses no longer mix lido drips - they come premixed and the pump calculates the drips for you now a days.
AND - this is not a professional document - this is a chat board on a shopping site. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Could be? I still appreciate it when somebody corrects me & I don't understand why people don't just say ""thanks"" & move on. (:

I think that is what most people here are saying.

Reading between the lines, I would say many of us would not get mad and move on but our preference would be not to have every little dotted i and crossed t to be scrutinized. Life is too short.

No, most people aren't saying that. From what I see, most people are saying let it go and don't try to embarrass anyone.
I hope you read the information about learning disabilities and dyslexia, and that problem spelling has nothing to do with education or IQ for many, many people.
