Cooking a turkey in a roaster oven question

I have a nice roaster oven that I have used to cook a turkey in before.

This time I am wondering if I really need to put it in a pan. Can I just use the rack they include with the oven.

I am making gravy ahead of time so the dripping are not something I must have.

I want to free up my oven for baking other meal items.

Doesn't your electric roaster have an insert?  I purchased one several years ago to free up oven space and love it!  The turkey comes out great but it has an insert where I add spices and moisture in the form of water, broth & some wine ....maybe yours is different in design.

Use the rack! I only use my Nesco for turkey. Always looks like a magazine photo. So juicy.

Remember back in the good old days of QVC when the Nesco was the "IN"  kitchen appliance to own?  Nobody had ever heard of Ninjas or air fryers or copper-looking pans or convection ovens.  There was that sweet vendor that everyone loved.   I had 2 of them, both turquoise.

Re: Cooking a turkey in a roaster oven question

@petepetey   I have the Nesco 18 Quart Roaster.  I place my turkey on the rack.  Then you MUST place it in the cookwell insert-- which sits atop and fits down inside the heatwell-- and is therefore safe from the heating/electrical element.

The juices will drip through the slats in the rack and collect in the bottom.  You can use those drippings as the starter for your gravy after you've pulled your finished turkey out to rest before carving it.

Hope this helps,

@Kachina624   Yes, I remember Virginia Olson demonstrating the Nesco.  One of my best friends from work and her Mom and Dad had QVC going on at least one of their TVs all the time.  Mother and daughter had the QVC credit cards and purchased alll the time.

I was a single mom of two growing teens at the time--the mid 1990s--so didn't have discretionary money to do any purchasing of things like that.

Her family surprised me by gifting me what I think was a round 4 or 6 quart.  I allowed someone to borrow it once and it was never returned.

Circa maybe 2005 I saw the Nesco 18 Qt. in red on deep discount at Sears and grabbed it.  Used it for many other things besides turkey, especially for food gatherings at work, and love that it doeesn't heat up the kitchen in the hot, humid summer months.  I even have the buffet serving kit and Virginia Olson's Recipe Book.  (Just tried to find it now since I had it out the other day but not sure where I put it down.)

Yes, nice trip down memory lane.  QVC had a different vibe back in those earlier times . . .

@brandiwine how does the turkey get brown?  I have a Nesco that my mom got so many years ago and gave it to me. I think she used it once.  I have had it for a long time, But I haven't used it yet. Im cooking two turkey breasts so yeah I would like to have my oven free for the fixins.

Thanks!

@aroc3435 , I have a 4 qt. that I use frequently. I was able to order a non- stick insert, and it is great for pot roast, meat loaf, or really most anything.

I sure wish I had kept a 6 qt. oval one!  They made the best roast chickens ever.
