My mom and I were discussing a case. There were 5 charges, the sentence is about 5 years on each one.
I was explaining to my mom that the defendant might only serve 5 years total if the judge orders concurrent VS consecutive.
She said "Then why even charge him with 5 charges if he might only serve the time for one?".
How does the judge determine which way to sentence? Thanks
