Am I making any sense today?   Didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night, so I got up and started watching "The Wire" on  On Demand (HBO) ... that is one great series ...

One of the most overlooked series ever on TV because it was back in the day when only network shows were recognized.  I watch favorite episodes to this day ON DEMAND.  I fell in love with Idris Elba, he epitomized the "elite" of the Baltimore gangs, and one would never even think he was British, I surely never did.  The acting was so natural throughout the entire cast.  There should have been Emmies all around for that show and it was never even nominated.  The writing, the production . . . there is still nothing on TV to this day that can match it.

You're so right, Ford ... I think I know all the characters "by heart," as we used to say when we were kids.

I also think politics in Hollywood kept this show from getting the accolades it deserved ... but then, that's a whole 'nother thread that would probably not make it out of the starting gate.

Funny, though ... of all the characters on the show, Elba's was my least favorite.   I did love Avon Barkesdale, though ... "guess I'm just a gangsta', I suppose."   That line always stayed with me.

David Alan in Paramus has some great people working there. It is in Paramus, N.J.

VioletEyes, I lived in Paramus as a young teenager, went to school there (Farview Avenue) for three years.  It was all celery farms then, the malls hadn't even been built yet. It was 1951 through 1954.  Can you imagine?

Not sure, but I think On Demand is by Comcast ... at least that's what I have.   And if you got premium channels like HBO, it wouldn't be extra.

SoX, you didn't like "Stringer Bell?"  Oh my!!  Omar used to fascinate me with his huge facial scar which, when he appeared on other shows later, was actually real.  I always thought it was makeup.  I always felt so much empathy for the kids.  It showed in such clarity how little chance they had.  One of the final episodes was about the school and how hard they tried to fight the politics.   My other favorite was about the docks, that whole storyline, and many of those actors went on to do guest parts in network series after the series ended.  The "little brother" on those episodes wound up being Jack Porter's "little brother" in "Revenge," although he was killed off pretty early.

Lance Reddick who was with the Police Department has had a lot of guest shots on network series, but none of the Wire actors really went on to stardom except for Idris and Dominic West.  Idris did a magnificent job with playing Nelson Mandela, and was nominated for an Oscar, but didn't win.

Ah well.  So it goes, right?

Ford (can't get used to Lilac) ...

Omar's character ... great acting!   Michael Williams, I believe his name is, was the lead actor in the HBO special about Bessie Smith.

I recently read an article in the Atlantic Monthly (I think ... don't quote me, though; I read online a lot) ... the author was from Baltimore ... he said the scenes were actually shot on the streets as they appeared ... and still do to this day.

I told my son that Season 2 was the sleeper in the whole series.   I didn't care for Season 5 ... think they ran out of material and should have ended at 4.
