@Cakers3. This guy told me that he would get a handicapped parking status. I don’t know if that is automatic with 100% disability or not. All I am saying is that I don’t think every 100% disabled vet needs that. This guy does not.

In Pennsylvania just because you are a disabled vet with a disabled license plate, you cannot legally park in a disabled parking spot.

You would need to be severely disabled and meet the same guidelines as everyone else with a disabled tag.

If you meet the guidelines, you would get a sticker to place on your disabeled vet license plate.  Then you can park in a disabled spot.

In order to get a permanent disabled tag you must meet these guidelines....disabled vet or not.

Re: Coming Out of Costco There Was A Big Issue With Someone Parked in the Handicapped Spot

A dear friend had an adult child with multiple disabilities; obviously she a tag on her car.  She had virtually been tethered to her son ( he needed constant care). Over a number of years she started having a number of her own problems but overlooked the necessity of getting a tag for her issues. One day she was at Loma Linda hospital ( without her son), parked in a handicap spot. A cop gave her a ticket and it was for several violations ( I don't know details) but she paid a fine of $450. I'll never forget!

My neurologist issued me a handicapped plate many many years ago due to my MS.  I didn't always need it but it could be a problem at any time, especially during 100 degree days.  Then I developed knee problems and knee surgeries.  And now my back is shot.  My husband has been driving me around for several months.  He drops me off at the entrances.  If he stays in the car, I call him when I'm checking out so he can pick me up at the door.  We use the handicap parking at restaurants.  I remember when we used to park as far away as we could just for the exercise. Hopefully, someday we'll be able to do that again.

You can't tell by looking at me that I have MS, have had two knee replacements, a broken back and am a heart patient.  I'm well dressed and look nice.  If I'm driving myself (rarely anymore) I would definitely need a handicap parking spot and hopefully be able to make it into the store with a cane.  Then I would have to use a motorized cart Smiley Sad  A few times I've asked my husband if I should try walking with the aid of a cane.  He says no.  I'm hopeful PT can strengthen my back!

I hope I would never be confronted by someone thinking I didn't need to park in a handicap spot.  It's embarrassing enough that I do have to.  I wouldn't engage with them.

I agree people shouldn't park in a handicapped spot unless they have a tag or special plate.

But let's give the guy benefit of the doubt that he forgot to hang the handicapped tag in his window.

I was once accosted for parking in a handicapped spot. I told the guy to check the handicapped sticker on my plates. That guy was so loud, obnoxious, and in-my-face.  He scared me so I soon traded in my sticker plates for handicapped plates.

@CalminHeart  I will give somewhat that this man may have forgotten to put up his placard since it is a possibility.

The problem in this picture is his response. It has me believing he knew exactly what he had done.

Being the self-appointed parking lot police is not my place. I also would not confront anyone without the display of a proper   placard or license plate with ISA symbols.

I would probably respond the same but with nicer words if someone yelled at me or asked for my info.  I'm not giving an ID or placard to someone because they yelled at me or even asked in a nicer way. It's not safe to get close to the person yelling at me. The handicapped driver was out of line too.

@Puppy Lips Not your decision nor place to evaluate what he does or does not need.

It does not negatively affect your life.

Let it go.

Be well.

I agree with the PA guidelines for needing a handicapped parking spot.  The gentleman I referred to does not meet any of those conditions.  Again, all I stated was that you should not automatically get one if the VA says you are 100% disabled.  Others may have a different opinion, but I am done with this conversation.

True, “there is no black and white when it comes to handicap” as you stated, but there IS black and white when it come to parking in handicap marked spaces. You must display a sticker, card or have a tag reflecting there is a handicapped person in this car. As such, the jerk was not in compliance with the laws and ordinances.

Today, I was coming out of Costco and I witnessed a person who parked in a handicapped spot with no handicapped plates or tag. He was just coming out of Costco to enter his car, and a car that DID have handicapped plates couldn't park because of this lazy person who didn't care.

There was a person in the handicapped car who was the driver with a person who used a wheelchair. The driver confronted the person who had illegally parked there, and the man just said to him, 'get out of my way' and then got in his car to leave.  I'm glad the driver of the handicapped car took a picture of his license plate that showed he was illegally parked there.

It got me thinking about it on my drive home. I wonder if he will call the police in that township or would he send pictures to the motor vehicle agency?  If it was in a Costco parking lot, would it have to be reported to Costco?   What do you all think?

@ciao_bella

Your post has had me thinking about this ....

I don't care if the man leaving was 100% wrong (that was never proven).

No one, especially a handicapped individual, should be confronting a stranger about their "right" to park in those spots.

Take a picture, REPORT them to Security or law enforcement, or just keep your mouth shut.

People are crazy.   Confronting strangers can end very badly.

Personally, I'd never show my dos or ID to some stranger demanding to see them.

IMO, just move on ...

Re: Coming Out of Costco There Was A Big Issue With Someone Parked in the Handicapped Spot

We had an incident at the town pool a few years ago. There was a swim meet with kids from areas. We got there and one of the handicapped spots was filled by a swim mom from a different club. There happened to be a police officer  there so we flagged him down only to be given some flip answers like this is private property. Yet we have a handicapped spot across from our home that has been there for many years and  yet people still park in it. We call the town and the people are ticket promptly

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

He was wrong, handicapped parking is enforced on private property.  He didn't want to deal with it.
