Comedian D-i-c-k Gregory Dead At 84

[ Edited ]

Those of us who were around in the 1960s remember groundbreaking African American comedian D-I-C-K Gregory, who came on the scene in comedy even before Cosby and Pryor.  I always watched him when he was on a show.

From an article on Page Six of the NY Post:

"Groundbreaking comedian and civil rights activist D-I-C-K Gregory died late Saturday in a Washington, D.C. hospital. He was 84. His son, Christian, told the Associated Press that his father had suffered a severe bacterial infection; he is survived by his wife Lillian and 10 children."

Using hypens because the board censor got me on the nickname for Richard.

What a great talent this man had - to top it off he was a really neat person. I remember him well.

What a loss even in this day and age.  I believe  he was scheduled to perform here in NYC at the Caroline' s comedy venue in a couple of months.

I watched him every chance I got, he was a brilliant comedian, a brilliant man.

I've never been a fan of slapstick or jokes insulting groups of people, and I got so sick of mother-in-law and wife jokes.   D. Gregory opened up a whole new world of comedy.

@Mz iMac  ????

Anyway he was so much more than a stand-up comic; even though the first to cross lines to perform for white audiences.

His contribution to civil rights outweighs his performances as a comedian.

A true loss.
