There are cases where bargaining is welcome. All schools, especially selective private ones want to increase their stat of how many are offered and how many accept. Is it called the yield? The last I knew Harvard had the highest yield. If DS has been accepted this early there is a chance he falls in the desirable category. It is almost expected he will bargain. However, if it is a big state school, there is no need to bargain because there is always someone else to fill the slot.

I should add that in the case of our big state school, they did tell us that the students who KA the first year can get full tuition departmental scholarships the rest of the years--regardless of need, just to keep the student from transferring. In the case of the selective private schools which do research, there are research asst jobs around and they pay well--regardless of need.
