The Johnson & Johnson vaccine prevents hospitalization as well as death. The added benefit is you only need to visit your local vaccine center or drug store pharmacy once and then you get your card stating you have been vaccinated.
I read just today that J & J are doing additional studies to see if a 2nd dose of their vaccine will give a higher level of protection.
Doctors and epidemiologists however have said not to get hung up on their percentage and comparing to the mRNA which J & J is not. It is an adenovirus based vaccine.

I think New Mexico is the only state using this system but with a fairly small population it's manageable. Everyone registers with the state health department, giving info about age, health, occupation, etc. You get a registration ID number.
Then using the CDC guidelines, people are contacted by text, email or phone and given an appointment date and time. Worked like a charm, I waited 2-3 weeks and got my email. Got my first shot last week at a location near home. No scrambling around for appointments or locations. Too bad they can't do this everywhere.
They're having a super event this week-end at a local convention center by appointment only where they'll do hundreds of people.

@Kachina624 On NBC national news the other day, J&J also said, "the vaccine will keep you out of the hospital & morgue."
That's good enough for me.

So the good news is it appears the J&J vaccine might be less effective at preventing catching the virus but performs solidly at preventing serious illness. One wonders if that's true for those with existing health issues. The unfortunate fact is that as of right now, it all boils down to what they have available when you're able to get the shot or shots... I maintain there should be a choice factor, and perhaps there will be down the road... All indications are this is not going to be a one time deal...

@stevieb I think our choice is we either take what is available or we wait it out for another to be developed. Supposedly there's 100's being developed. I haven't had a chance to talk to my GP in over a year but have an appt in March. I really want to know his opinion.

@tucsongal wrote:From what I’ve read, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is very effective at preventing hospitalizations and death. We need to get as many people vaccinated to some degree as soon as possible. Ideally, it would make sense to use the Johnson and Johnson for younger people not at high risk, but as we know this is not an ideal situation.
Many people don’t have transportation or internet access to get the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines soon, and many don’t have the financial option to stay home. The J and J vaccine may be a life saver for a lot of people.
@tucsongal, it also maybe a viable vaccine for the homeless and transient, who are less likely to get a second dose.

@Kachina624 It surely sounds like New Mexico, along with several other states, most with more manageable populations, quickly got its act together. More's the pity, Virginia didn't. From the get-go there have been fits and starts, not the least of which was not getting the supply we were supposedly 'due'... Of course, we do have a fairly large population and that is a factor. Also of course, the governor is defending the state's roll out, though he seems to be one of only a handful convinced it was well conceived or executed... While it's improved, for some time Virginia was at or near the bottom of the vaccine administration list... It started out with local jurisdictions managing the sign up for local health departments and now everything has been transitioned mid-stream to the state... So many opportunities for margins of error, but they assure us the cross walks went smoothly... Who knows... I do get weekly emails assuring me both I and my mother are on the list... Not sure how much that means at this point...

There's this one pundit from the National Review who said that between the number of people in the U.S. that already had covid and the number who already got vaccinated - even if that meant just one jab so far, ......it means herd immunity is happening already. Unbelievable how these people come up with this stuff.

@Mz iMac. Just this morning heard that J&J vaccine is only 71% effective. That's not worth the effort, I wouldn't even bother. It's actually dangerous because people think they're protected, become complacent and careless when they actually only have limited protection.
Well since the average flu vaccine barely reaches 50% and every year people have to complain that people don't get that vaccine. Would think that this would be a great option for those who need some protection.
I finally agree with a @CrazyDaisy post! This is amazing! Celebrate good times, come on! ![]()
I think the vaccine versions that are a bit less effective in preventing all Covid levels, but that are 99% or 100% at preventing hospitalization and death would be a great option for younger, healthier people and children.
If we can keep everyone from dying of or losing a lung to Covid, that would be a major step up in quality of life.
I'd still prefer the Moderna, though. That's the one I want when it is my turn. Pfizer would be fine too. And I'd prefer the J&J to nothing if that were the only choice.
