I have a question. If I buy a coat as a present for someone, should I go up one size from their normal clothes size? My thinking is because it will go on top of their normal clothes. When I buy for myself I try things on. But I want this as a surprise present. Should I size up? Thanks.

I always prefer a cold weather coat in a size up. That way when it is really cold out I can still wear a couple layers under the coat.

If you're buying the coat from a brick and mortar store, try the coat on in your size to see if it fits true to size or if it runs big or small, then adjust the size you're buying as a gift. If you're buying it online, check the reviews to see if they indicate how the sizing on the coat runs. In either case, be sure to request a gift receipt so the recipient can exchange it if the size you chose doesn't work for them.

I am normally in between sizes and always go to the larger size for coats. My issue is I want to be able to button/zip it without that "snug" feeling in the waist area. Nice gift idea, by the way.

I've never gone up a size in a coat. I guess I always assumed they knew the owner would wear clothes under it and took that into account when determining the dimensions.
This doesn't apply to coats designed for flashers.

I never go up a size since they seem to be designed to go over a semi bulky layer. Some do like a roomier fit. Could the existing coats give a clue for preference?
