Re: Climate Change May Be Causing Earth’s Poles To Shift

[ Edited ]

@Lucky Charm

Good points.

"The generation of electric power produces more pollution than any other single industry in the United States. Recent (2002) data shows the U.S. electricity industry was responsible for:

  • 63% of sulfur dioxide emissions that contribute to acid rain
  • 22% of NOx emissions that contribute to urban smog
  • 39% of carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change
  • 33% of mercury emissions that pose significant health risks

Among the other major environmental issues linked to electricity are water impacts, generation of wastes, and the disruption of land uses."

I always heard that the poles were shifting due to Niburu, also referred to as Planet X.

Add the rest of the world to that 63% who accept the facts. We're about the only people in the world who have deniers.Sad isn't it ?

Not all the 'deniers' live in the West.

You're right there, @SydneyH., but you'd have to go into a jungle or some deserted island to find them. LOL

Scientists solve mystery of why the planet’s axis is tilting eastward

"The position of Earth’s axis has dramatically shifted, likely because of melting ice sheets (fueled by climate change) and natural changes in water storage on land, according to a new study in the journal Science Advances.

The shifting axis might add to the effects of climate change on our stressed-out planet: Global temperatures are getting hotter. Weather events are becoming more extreme. Sea levels are rising.

'What the shift does tell scientists,' Ivins said, 'is that we have a new tool to probe past climate changes in a very quantitative and accurate way. To us, that is significant.' "

You do have lots of company, 23% of Americans don't care or believe it.

But, then again, 63% do.

The surveys I've seen were nothing like the numbers you cite.  And they were recent.  It was near the very bottom of the list of concerns.  People are concerned about jobs, the economy, and a raft of other things.  It is a boutique issue.

I quoted studies, not surveys.  A survey is meaningless, it's about people who are around or want to respond, not balanced.

So who did this "study" to find that 63% of Americans believe in CC - and how was it conducted that made it different than a "survey?"

I already explained your second question.  The study referred to was from Yale.  Details would be easy for you to Google, should you need more information.

It may be because we moved all our furniture to 1 side of our house. Ya never know. Some say CC is responsible for so many things I've lost count, so why not our furniture? It's just as likely as many other things I have heard and read.

Too funny.

Remember the earth has been here longer than humans got up and walked.  It went through ice ages, polar shifts, droughts, etc.  It's just doing its thing.  Not a thing we can do about it.

@Puzzle Piece

There's a lot we can do about it.  See post 51, causes are listed for several man made issues.  We can also clean up the garbage putting toxins in the oceans which contributes to killing sea life.  We can shift home energy from electric to solar.  On and on.

That's cute. There are over 12,000 papers supporting it and there's a 97% consensus rate that it's real and that people are contributing to it.

And no, we're not cooling. That's a myth believed when people don't look at the whole picture.

And who is putting out most of these "so-called" carbon footprints?  Last I heard it wasn't the United States, and do you think China cares?  I don't, but then again when I see the biggest advocates for pushing CC? They all seem to be spewing jet fuel on their private planes, and lecturing what others should be doing, or not doing.

They ever hear of United/Delta or other commercial airlines? Nah! And fly with all us nasty polluters of our planet? That'll be the day.

"Do as I say, not as I do".  Where have I heard that before?

Re: Climate Change May Be Causing Earth’s Poles To Shift

Is the planet warming? Most likely.

Are humans responsible, or is this a natural event? Likely a bit of both.

Will humans all die as a result of global warming? No. Humans live everywhere from the arctic circle to the equator. We're very adaptable. Even a massive change in temps is survivable for humans.

Are greenhouse gases the big bad villain? I doubt it. We're consuming three times the BTU's that we were in the fifties. That's three times the heat generated by humans over the last half century. If we're generating three times more heat now than we were fifty some years ago, the planet had better be getting warmer or we'd be in bigger trouble. If you go back to the early models of greenhouse gas warming, we'd now be a lot warmer than we are if the greenhouse effect was responsible.

How do we fix it? The reality is we can't if it's not greenhouse gases that are causing the issue. If it's just radiant heat then unless people are willing to stop heating/air conditioning their homes/businesses we're going to keep heating up the planet.

The reality is from the time man first figured out how to make fire we've played some small role in heating the planet. Is it a massive problem that requires the spending of trillions of dollars? Not really. Most of the uproar is politically motivated and has become political fodder. Much of the money that's been spent to combat global warming has gone to political supporters (Solindra being just one example) and has had little to no impact on global warming. It's much more of a political issue than a real world issue.

"But, but, but we're all going to drown when the sea rises! Those lucky enough to survive the sea rise will then be killed by the tropical diseases that move north!" Well, it may kill the humans stupid enough to stay in place while the sea rises around them until they drown, but that's no big loss. As to the tropical diseases, is there a part of the tropics now that humans don't go to on vacation?

The changes are incremental and humans are amazingly adaptable. We'll survive no matter what happens. Global warming is an inconvenience, but it's not the end of the world. Life on the planet is pretty darn adaptable. There are humans living in the Sahara desert with insanely high daily temperatures. As temperatures have shifted so has life on the planet. Manatees were spotted as far north as the Chesapeake Bay last summer. Lionfish, a tropical marine fish, now come as far north as New Jersey. (I'm not sure I didn't see where one was spotted near Massachusetts.)  Life adapts to changes on the planet. It always has, it always will.

The Earth has never been stable. It changes. It's changed before humans ever came, and it'll change long after we're gone. Do we play a role? Sure. So does every other living creature on the planet. The doom and gloom predictions are way, way over the top though. The reality is that humans will survive pretty much no matter what happens. Life will survive no matter what happens. Life is persistent. There's life in the coldest and hottest parts of the world. As problems go, global warming should be way, way down the list. You (and all of your children and children's children) are far more likely to die from a million other causes than global warming.

Global warming has caught the attention of "The sky is falling" crowd who always believe something horrible is just around the corner and only they're smart enough to see it coming. The reality is the sky isn't falling. We aren't all doomed. The world will go on. It might be a bit warmer, it might be a bit wetter, but we'll survive. We always have and we always will.

Fly!!! Eagles!!! Fly!!!
