Last year my sister's homemaker ruined her self cleaning oven by using oven cleaner and scouring it.  They had to give her a new stove.

@chrystaltree  did your sister tell her it was self cleaning? I told my housekeeper and she looked at me like I was crazy.

She did but her homemaker has only been here a few years and didn't understand.  And my sister think to show her what she meant.

My old oven was a Bosch duel fuel.  Gas on top and electric on bottom, no coil though.  A lot easier to clean than that dual wall Dacor ovens I have now.  The coil on the bottom moves a little, can be lifted slightly but be gentle and cautious.  I do that if something spills but otherwise I use the self clean oven feature.  My problem is not so much the coil, it's getting the oven clean, especially the door.  I've tried just about everything I think, home remedies, lemon, baking soda, etc.  and even used a high grade steamer.  Steamer did nothing fo the door.  UGH!

my oven has a steam-clean setting.  careful to keep spills from setting and bake in. olive oil is a PAIN.

have run the self-clean once and it STINKS even when windows are all open.

the racks are a pain to clean and you cannot leave them in for self-clean.

long ago i used Easy-Off but after a chemical burn on my ankle never again!  and the fumes smell so bad when burning off.

i use my self clean feature every other month or so. i do have the steam clean feature but i have never used it. is it more for light cleaning?

@sunshine45   my oven has had spills from oil and splatters from a number of  roast beef, roast chicken meals . the steam function worked great.  wiped it down after with a bit of windex.  you do not have the ash as with self-clean.  i go with steam now. just keep up with it to avoid the high heat self-clean cycle.
