Clarks canvas shoe recall

[ Edited ]

Just saw this on the Consumer Protection site......(typo fixed)....

Clarks Americas Recalls Women’s Navy Blue Canvas Shoes Due to Chemical Hazard

Hazard:

Prolonged and direct contact with the shoes’ upper material can expose the wearer to the chemicals benzidine and/or dimethoxybenzidine, which are toxic and can cause adverse health effects.

Remedy:

Consumers should immediately stop wearing the shoes and visit Clarks web site for instructions on how to receive a full refund. Consumers will need to upload a photo of their shoes in order to determine if they are included in this recall. If included in the recall, Clarks will send consumers free shipping materials and a pre-paid shipping label to send back the shoes. Consumers may also return their shoes to the place where purchased.

Units:

About 113,000 (In addition, about 10,000 were sold in Canada)

Re: Clarks canvas shoe recall

How could they not know that those chemicals were being used and how could they not know the hazards those chemicals could cause?

When canvas shoes are hazardous to your health-what is left???

Re: Clarks canvas shoe recall

@Cakers3  Good question!  Those chemicals are apparently used in the dying process.  Seems that everything is toxic these days.  Shoes, sports bras.........the list grows and grows, on and on.  Found this on the EPA site:

Q4. Why is EPA concerned about benzidine-based dyes?

Exposure to benzidine-based dyes are of concern to consumers, workers and children because benzidine dyes can be converted in the body into a chemical that is known to cause cancer. These dyes also have the potential to separate from textiles, such as clothing, that are in prolonged contact with human skin, increasing exposure risks.

@Cakers3 @@Hi there. Those chemicals are used in the production of dyes. My guess is that Clark's does not make their own dyes but purchases their dyes and was not initially aware of the presence of the chemicals. I don't think Clark's had a sinister motive.  They might need to hire a chemical testing company to check the mach up of each product they plan to run before they run it. I don't know if this is feasible in their industry or not.

@Cakers3 Either they don't care or they are doing it to harm.  I worry about this from some places in the world.

@Sooner @Cakers3 @@I don't think they want the expense of a recall. They probably do care about profits and recalls can cut into profits.

Re: Clarks canvas shoe recall

I'm thinking that all US companies should test dyes, and almost everything else.

I know,.......a very difficult, and maybe impossible, feat at this point in time.

One thing for sure, all baby clothes and toys should be tested.  Period.

@Mindy D I figure with as much is shipped and shoes (really?) they figured they would never be caught.  What else?  Pants? Sweaters?  Diapers?
