Re: Christmas Shopping Locally

I shop all year for Christmas gifts.  Some I buy locally and some on-line.  I have to mail most my gifts so I have to be done about 2 weeks before everyone else.  I have my gifts all bought and wrapped.  I need to make the cookies in the next couple of weeks and then get everything in the mail.  I also make cookie plates for neighbors and friends.

Re: Christmas Shopping Locally

I'm kind of all spread out. I've ordered from 4 or 5 different vendors on Etsy. Two local gift shops, Talbots, Amazon, Bath and Body Works. Toys R Us for my husband's grandson and a few food type items from QVC for the neighbors.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Happy Saturday everyone.  I find myself purchasing more gifts locally this year.  A few years ago I purchased most of my gifts from the Q, especially for my grand kids.  This year I purchased a couple NFL items from HSN for my son and daughter in law.  But I am shopping locally.  What about you?

I shop locally too...even for things like Alex & Ani bracelets for my best friend who collects them.

I have done a LOT of "shopping" at estate sales and I put together baskets for special people. My cousin loves Depression glass and I always get her some estate sale pieces. This year I got her a large cake plate in the poinsettia pattern, along with Italian cookies from a local bakery, a cooking magazine subscription and the BEST- a Christmas brooch to pin in the plaid ribbon on top (she LOVES holiday jewelry).

Re: Christmas Shopping Locally

The trend right now is online shopping.  Not exactly the most economical, but online retailers have such great marketing skills it makes people feel like they have the best deals.  It's actually more fun this time of year to shop locally.  I am lucky to have many very nice storefronts, large and small, nearby and a flexible schedule to go to them.

Re: Christmas Shopping Locally

We have a Big Lots and Target in our town. That's it for shopping. I'm in my 80s, so shopping from the Q and Amazon works best for me. There's almost nothing one can't get from the big A.

I like to shop for really unique items at arts and crafts shows, which means locally.

I only go to the really good ones, mostly juried although some not, for one-of-a-kind things.  Plus, I really like to support artisans and craftspeople - it's a tough businss for them.  I'd "rather give it to the little guy (or gal)".  I was at one earlier today in fact.

I'm not buying any gifts from QVC, and little for myself any more except for the one brand I like here. The no-more-shipping-refund policy has done me in.  It's just too costly.

Besides, when I see gifts at the arts and crafts shows, I'm almost certain the person I buy for will like it.  I choose very individualized gifts for people that they usually end up loving (ditto for greeting cards - very individual to the person's likes/tastes, etc.).

Best ever gifts are 'pre owned'! I collect a number of things, as do my family members, and we are all excited to get something vintage for our collections. Husband likes old cars and tools, and I have a vintage Pyrex addiction that just won't quit. My kid usually finds the best Pyrex pieces for me for holidays.

I've gone to at least 30 shows and 50 shops/galleries in three states, and I've picked up everything from a $10 angel ornament that I adore to a piece of pottery from an artist that's in the Smithsonian. Luckily there are at least one or two good shows a year in even the smaller towns.  Then there's Etsy.  A favorite potter posted new pieces today, and I grabbed up two items in a heartbeat, and I'm expecting a custom piece next week.  If it's not handmade in this country, I'm not really purchasing.

I just wish I had more options locally.
