Christmas Party attire

We are attending a Christmas Gala party and I just saw that it's Black Tie optional. My husband is going to wear a suit, he doesn't want to rent a tux, which is fine with me. I however, was planning on wearing a red topper with slim black pants and 4 in heels with a red bow on them. I was going for the festiv look not formal. Do you think it's ok?

We generally do not go out formal. We are both casual/sporty type of people. I'm sure some women will have full length formals on.

Have any of you been to a formal event recently and do you remember what you saw women wearing???
