There was an article published in Rare that made me think of this little childhood ditty. Apologies for any earworms this causes.
Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them o'er your shoulder like a Continental Soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

I remember the song, but it wasn't about ears, it was about breasts.

Precocious child or pre-teen flashback?

i have heard the original version, but i remember hearing the breast version a whole lot more. boys in elementary school/junior high schools used to tease/harrass/torment the girls quite a bit.

We sang this at camp when I was a kid!
It would start out really slow, then each time we'd speed up until singing it so fast you couldn't get the words in.
At the time, I hated camp, and being away from home for a whole week, but now I do have some fond memories of that time.

You wouldn't believe my group of songs I know, that one included, from working with children. I do know that one. LOL

But I grew up in NICEVILLE I remember it as follows:
Did you ever go a'fishing on a bright summer day?
Sit on the bank and watch the fishies play,
With your hands in your pockets and your pockets in your pants
And watch the little fishies do a hoochie coochie dance!

I remember "Do your Ears Hang Low"--too cool to think of it again.
Does anyone else recall "There were three jolly fishermen?" The lyrics annoyed the counselors at my church-affiliated summer camp---just the second stanza, which states the place of residence of the fishermen: "Amster- Amster- dam dam dam." "Children! Stop that!"
I was cleaning house the other day and heard myself singing a skip-rope song to my cats: "R-A-T-T-L-E-S-N-A-K-E spells rattlesnake." The lyrics aren't much but the irritating melody is unforgettable.
My sister is a middle school math teacher and at the recess, she is teaching the children these play-songs and the various ways jump-rope can be played.
